What’s the deal with Usenet Newsgroups Retention?
January 1st, 2009
Recently, NewsDemon.com’s Usenet Newsgroups had made several retention upgrades. We had been waiting on these upgrades for some time now and we were happy to finally be able to pass the extra days along to our customers.
Now, we are getting customers who have seen that several of our competitors are following suit and increasing their retention above and beyond what we currently show. So, we thought we would clear the air about NewsDemon.com retention.
It is NewsDemon.com’s internal policy to NOT report retention increases until we are able to actually provide and verify these days of retention on our servers. Often, our retention numbers posted are only the amount of days available through use of article ids and exclude additional days that might be available in a group. This mostly occurs on some of the larger groups with over a billion articles.
With that in mind, we would like our customers to know we are currently showing slightly over 200 days of retention in most of our core groups we use for measurement. We will be updating the numbers on our website later this week. And although we do not choose to provide an actual number of days we are building up to, we will share that we do not intend to stop growing our retention in the near future. Building retention is a very costly and time consuming endeavor and we at NewsDemon.com hope you will understand our efforts to provide accurate information regarding our continuing upgrades on our Premium Usenet Access services.
From all of us at NewsDemon.com, we wish you a happy and prosperous 2009.

Newsdemon.com Upgrades Data Center
September 23rd, 2008
Newsdemon.com will be upgrading all users currently using the following nntp addresses to our new data center:
· us-east.newsdemon.com
· us-secure.newsdemon.com
With this change, which will take place between midnight and 1am on September 24th, 2008, the Newsdemon.com US based data center will be better equipped with new equipment, better stability, increased retention and redundancy.New members will automatically be routed to these new servers. Existing customers will be notified before being automatically transferred over to the upgraded servers.
The new data center also represents a change in article numbers for each newsgroup. Only current users that have stored their headers in their newsreader will be affected and will have to re-subscribe to their newsgroups to retrieve the newly numbered headers. This represents the only change current users will experience.
All other changes are automatic and will not affect Newsdemon.com member’s configuration or any other user access. All members should immediately notice better stability and a higher quality of service in this release.
The new Newsdemon.com data center extends current capabilities and will be a positive change in the end user experience. Further details on the increased retention and redundancy will be updated here throughout and after the transition. At Newsdemon.com, we appreciate your patronage as we continue to demonstrate our dedication in providing our customers with superior service and support. Any inquiries, questions or concerns regarding this matter can be directed to our technical support team.

N.Y. Attorney General forces ISPs to curb Usenet access
June 10th, 2008
Three major internet service providers have all agreed to block customer access to newsgroups, according to the agreement that was announced yesterday by the New York attorney general’s office.
Verizon, Sprint and Time Warner Cable have agreed to dismantle usenet access to their users, either partially or entirely. Details on what each company will end up censoring in total has still yet to be announced.
Time Warner Cable has been the only company to go on the record currently to state that it will be shutting down ALL Newsgroups it controls on its network. Time Warner Cable has already been in the news recently as it announced a tentative release of a new rate plan which would charge users who went over a set download limit per month.
Sprint and Verizon have yet to state anything other than they would “limit access” to newsgroups on their networks to their customers. Verizon has also been a very big proponent of limiting general download usage of customers, as Sprint has been rumored to be in the works of creating a similar rate plan as Time Warner Cable has announced.
The incentive for these companies appear to be noble on the cover. However, with information regarding concerns on the usage of their networks many are speculating that this is drawn from an agenda to reduce traffic on there networks in order to gain higher returns. One of the top arguments is that the proposed incentive is to shut down thousands of legitimate newsgroups that are irrelevant in this case rather than just a few offending groups that would be questionable.
At Newsdemon, we hold open arms to all the refugees of these networks that are being left out in the cold by these ISPs. As an incentive, we’re offing 15% off all of our monthly rate plans for a limited time only for customers from Time Warner, Verizon and Sprint.
Simply use the discount coupon twarner15 on our join page to receive a discount for the life on your account.
