REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION
Group Name: comp.sys.fpga
Status: unmoderated
Distribution: world wide
Summary: Discussions related to FPGA based computing systems
Proposed by: Jeffrey M. Arnold (jma@super.org)
This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) on the creation of an
unmoderated newsgroup, comp.sys.fpga
CHARTER
The unmoderated newsgroup comp.sys.fpga will be open to discussions on
all topics related to the use of reconfigurable Field Programmable
Gate Arrays (FPGAs) as computational engines. Appropriate topics
include, but are not limited to,
system architecture
FPGA device architecture
languages and compilation techniques
tools
software environments
applications
RATIONALE
In the past several years interest in FPGA based computing has
increased dramatically. There have now been two IEEE workshops
(FCCM'93 and FCCM'94) devoted to this topic, and researchers have been
discussing these issues through the internet mailing list
"fpga@super.org" since November 1992. The mailing list has grown to
approximately 300 subscribers worldwide. The proposed newsgroup is
the natural outgrowth of that list.
CROSS POSTINGS
This RFD is being posted to news.groups, news.announce.newgroups,
comp.arch, and comp.sys.super. Discussion will take place in the
group "news.groups". A Call For Votes will be posted in approximately
21 days, after which an independent third party will conduct the vote.

There were 306 YES votes and 22 NO votes, for a total of 328 valid votes.
There were 3 abstains.
For group passage, YES votes must be at least 2/3 of all valid (YES and NO)
votes. There also must be at least 100 more YES votes than NO votes.
There is a five day discussion period after these results are posted. If no
serious allegations of voting irregularities are raised, the moderator of
