REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
comp.graphics.packages.alias
______________________________________________________
Group name: comp.graphics.packages.alias
Status: Unmoderated
Summary Discussion on all aspects of modeling, animation, and paint
programs from Alias Research.
Proposed by: Mark Jordan <mdj@uga.cc.uga.edu>
This is a formal request for discussion (RFD) on the creation of an
unmoderated news group, comp.soft-sys.alias, dedicated to the topic of
Alias software products and their application. The discussion period
will last at least 22 days, and if no objections are raised will
result in a call for votes (CFV).
CHARTER
----------------------------------------------------------
This group will be dedicated to the discussion of Alias software
products and their application. These products include, but are not
limited to Alias PowerAnimator, Alias Studio, Alias Sketch!, and Alias
Eclipse.
Appropriate topics within these guidelines might include technical
questions, tips and tricks, information about Alias products old and
new, and announcement of employment opportunities of interest to
subscribers.
RATIONALE
----------------------------------------------------------
There is currently a listserv mailing list (administered by myself)
dedicated to this topic with approximately 200 subscribers and rather
heavy traffic. The traffic issue has led many subscribers, who
typically might subscribe to many such lists, to suggest that an
actual news group might be a more appropriate forum for discussion.
The University of Georgia will set up a mail gateway for those who do
not have Internet access.
Alias (PowerAnimator and/or Studio) is a very powerful and complex
software package. One of the industry's high-end packages for design
and animation, it's use is as varied as Volvos and Dinosaurs.
Examples of recent applications include the films Jurassic Park and
The Mask, and product design from Apple PowerBooks to Cadillacs.
The name of the group, comp.graphics.packages.alias, was suggested by
a member of group advice.
CROSS-POSTINGS
------------------------------------------------------------
This RFD is being Cross-Posted to the following groups:
news.announce.newgroups
news.groups
comp.graphics
comp.graphics.animation
comp.graphics.raytracing
comp.graphics.visualization
comp.sys.sgi.graphics
comp.sys.sgi.apps
alt.artcom
It will also be posted to the mailing list, alias-l@uga.cc.uga.edu.
Please note that ALL discussion should take place in the group, news.groups
according to guidelines. If there are no outstanding issues at the end of 22
days of posting, I will contact Mr. Ron Dippold, an independent third party,
for a call for votes (CFV) to be issued and a vote to be taken

STANDARD VOTING INFO
You should send MAIL (posts to a group are invalid) to
voting@ziggy.ph.utexas.edu
(just replying by MAIL to this message should work). Your mail
message should contain one and only one of the following statements:
I vote YES on comp.graphics.packages.alias.
I vote NO on comp.graphics.packages.alias.
I vote ABSTAIN on comp.graphics.packages.alias.
I vote CANCEL on comp.graphics.packages.alias.
You may add a comment, but anything other than a definite statement involving
the group name and "yes", "no", "for", or "against" on a single line may be
rejected by the automatic vote counting program. An "abstain" vote has no
effect on the result, but your vote will be registered.
If you later change your mind you may send in another vote. Only the last
valid vote received will count. You may also vote "cancel", which is similiar
to "abstain", but your vote will not be listed in the final vote tally.
You should receive an acknowledgement (via email) of your vote within
one to three days. Additional CFVs will NOT include mass ACKs, only
ACKs for undeliverable mail.
Standard Guidelines for voting apply: One vote per person (regardless
of how many accounts you have) and one vote per account (regardless of
how many people use that account). Votes from system accounts, e.g.
root, postmaster, et al., and votes from anonymous accounts will be
rejected. 100 more YES votes than NO votes and 2/3 of all votes being
YES are the requirements for group creation. Addresses and votes of all
voters will be published in the final voting results list.
