REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION
Group Name: comp.lang.m
Status: unmoderated
Distribution: world-wide
Summary: Discussions related to the M language
Proposed by: Daniel P. B. Smith (dpbsmith@world.std.com)
This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) on the subject of
creating an unmoderated Usenet newsgroup, comp.lang.m
CHARTER
The proposed unmoderated newsgroup comp.lang.m will be
open to discussions on all topics related to the M language
(ANSI X11.1) and M technology. Appropriate topics would
include, but not be limited to,
advocacy
bindings to GUI platforms (M Windowing API)
discussions of commercial products
object-oriented extensions
PC networking issues
programming techniques
tools
etc.
The only topic that is excluded is:
discussion of the ANSI X11.1 standard itself
which should be discussed in the existing group comp.std.mumps.
This RFD is cross-posted to comp.std.mumps.
This is NOT a call for votes. A Call For Votes (CFV) will be
posted 21 to 30 days from now and will be conducted by an
independent third party.
Note the follow-up to news.groups. The format for this RFD is
indirectly stolen from the RFD for comp.org.uniforum (via
RFD: comp.sys.embedded) and I thank those involved.

2nd REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION
Group Name: comp.lang.mumps
Status: unmoderated
Distribution: world-wide
Summary: Discussions related to the M (MUMPS) language
Proposed by: Daniel P. B. Smith (dpbsmith@world.std.com)
******************************************************************
NOTE: This is similar to the original RFD: comp.lang.m, posted
on May 16th, except that
-- the proposed name has been changed to comp.lang.mumps
-- I've tried to make clearer that it's open to discussions
of ANY version of M under ANY name
The change was made as the result of on-line discussion and a
straw poll in which eight out of nine preferred "mumps."
Chief reasons given included:
-- better searchability on the term "mumps"
-- consistency with the existing newsgroup comp.std.mumps
-- more meaningful to both the general and M community
The CFV will occur 21 to 30 days after the ORIGINAL May 16th RFD,
and will call for votes on "comp.lang.mumps." The original proposer
WITHDRAWS the proposed name "comp.lang.m" in favor of "comp.lang.mumps"
