REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION
on creating
comp.protocols.smb
RATIONALE
There is currently no Usenet newsgroup for discussions about the use
of the SMB networking protocol, or for discussions about SMB-based
software packages. This protocol is increasing in popularity and
deserves a proper home.
The SMB protocol is used by software such as Microsoft LAN Manager,
IBM LAN Server, Windows for Workgroups, Windows NT and the upcoming
new version of Windows, "Chicago." It provides services for name
services, disk sharing, printer sharing and browsing. It can run on
top of Netbeui, IPX/SPX, and, more importantly, TCP/IP, making it a
versatile protocol with capabilities exceeding those of NFS.
There is currently available a free (using the GNU Public License)
implementation of and SMB server and client, Samba, developed by
Andrew Tridgell at the Australian National University in Canberra,
Australia. With the added availability of the free TCP/IP protocol
stack (for Windows) and client software (for MS-DOS and OS/2) from
Microsoft, SMB becomes a versatile yet inexpensive alternative to NFS
for Unix/Windows/MS-DOS internetworking.
There is now in existence a mailing list for Samba and SMB discussions,
hosted at the Australian National University. This mailing list has
been growing in both membership and traffic, and the time has come to
make the transition into a newsgroup. Currently the mailing list has
over 400 subscribers (not including those served by remote mail
exploders), with increasingly heavy traffic. The Samba ftp site also
gets 200-400 connections per week.
PROPOSED CHARTER
comp.protocols.smb (unmoderated)
comp.protocols.smb is for discussions about the use of the SMB
protocol, its applications and compatability, and for the
discussions about SMB-based server and client software, such
as Samba.
DISCUSSION AND VOTING
The discussion period lasts for 21 days from the date in the header
of this article. All discussion should take place in news.groups.
The group name in this proposal is subject to change, and if
necessary, a second, revised RFD will be posted prior to the end
of the discussion period.
A CFV (Call for Votes) will be posted after the end of the discussion
period. The vote will be run by a neutral third party.
This RFD attempts to fully comply with Usenet newsgroup creation
guidelines set in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup". Please
refer to this document if you have questions about the process.

It has been argued that SMB is not a protocol; however, the official

"SMB FILE SHARING PROTOCOL". This certainly makes it as much of a
protocol as, say, NFS (in comp.protocols.nfs).

There is a five day discussion period after these results are posted. If no
serious allegations of voting irregularities are raised, the moderator of
