Proposal for a new newsgroup
Proposed by: Keith Wilson <sais@jupiter.sun.csd.unb.ca>
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Group name: misc.education.science
Status: unmoderated
Distribution: world-wide
Summary: a newsgroup for the discussion of issues related to the
teaching of science-related topics
JUSTIFICATION:
Today, science has brought to humankind better health, improved
communication, better transportation and other advancements that raise the
standard of living. There have also been some potentially harmful
scientific developments such as chemical weapons and bombs. It is
imperative that students see the potentialities of science, whether
harmful or beneficial, in order to judge how best to use science in their
own lives and in the best interests of society.
It is for this reason that a newsgroup to communicate ideas and
experiences of educators from around the globe be proposed. This group
would be a source of insight for those who want to add some zest to their
lectures. Currently, there exists a group to discuss the science of
education (sci.edu) but not the education of science.
CHARTER:
The proposed group will provide a forum for the discussion of issues
related to the teaching of science and related topics. These include,
but are not limited to:
* innovative demonstrations
* problem based learning
* computer use in science education
* current problems in science education
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Please send comments and criticism to sais@jupiter.sun.csd.unb.ca, and
post information for discussion to the news groups (news.groups)
**********************************************************************
NOTE
This RFD is being issued in concordance with the guidelines set in the
"How to create a new usenet newsgroup" FAQ regularly posted to
news.announce.newgroups. Please refer to this article if you have any
questions about the newsgroup creation.
This RFD has been cross-posted to misc.education, sci.edu and
news.groups.
Unless the discussion indicates a need to resubmit a new RFD, the CFV
will be posted approximately three to four weeks after the posting of
this RFD.
SPONSOR
This news group is proposed and will be supported by Student Awareness in
Science (SAIS) in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. SAIS is a
non-profit organisation promoting an interest in and an awareness of
science. We will collate interesting threads, FAQ's, and other resources
of interest and maintain them under our listserv (SAIS-L@UNB.CA).
Gopher, Mosaic, and anonymous FTP archives of the discussions will be
made available as resources permit.

REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
moderated group misc.education.science (moderates existing group)
Proposed by: Keith Wilson <sais@jupiter.sun.csd.unb.ca>
Proposed Moderator: Keith Wilson <sais@jupiter.sun.csd.unb.ca>
Summary: a newsgroup for the discussion of issues related to the
teaching of science-related topics
RATIONALE:
Today, science has brought to humankind better health, improved
communication, better transportation and other advancements that raise the
standard of living. There have also been some potentially harmful
scientific developments such as chemical weapons and bombs. It is
imperative that students see the potentialities of science, whether
harmful or beneficial, in order to judge how best to use science in their
own lives and in the best interests of society.
It is for this reason that a newsgroup to communicate ideas and
experiences of educators from around the globe was created. This group
has been a source of insight for those who want to add some zest to their
lectures. However, of late there has been a large number of 'spams' to
the newsgroup resulting in a number of complaints. As well, since this
group is bi-directionally linked to a LISTSERV mailing list, this will
help eliminate the many misaddressed postings for subscription/signoff.
It was suggested on the group that it be moderated instead. Thus this
RFD is being proposed.
CHARTER: misc.education.science
The proposed group will continue to provide a forum for the discussion of
issues related to the teaching of science and related topics. These
include, but are not limited to:
* innovative demonstrations
* problem based learning
* computer use in science education
* current problems in science education
Sponsorship:
This news group is proposed and will be supported by Student Awareness in
Science (SAIS) in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. SAIS is a
non-profit organisation promoting an interest in and an awareness of
