This is a Request For Discussion for the formation of several new newsgroups
under the misc.kids hierarchy. The groups are: misc.kids.info,
misc.kids.consumers, misc.kids.health, and misc.kids.pregnancy.
Note: Other proposals of interest to misc.kids, and currently in the
discussion stage are: misc.education.home-school, rec.arts.books.children,
misc.education.learning-disab, and sci.med.pregnancy (a separate proposal
>from misc.kids.pregnancy).
misc.kids.info
Charter: For the posting of misc.kids FAQ files on a regular basis.
Rationale: There are more than sixty misc.kids FAQ files, and misc.kids
is a very high volume group. The primary reason that FAQ files have
not been posted on misc.kids on a regular basis is a concern over volume.
Having a separate newsgroups for the FAQs allows sites to determine if
they want to receive them, yet makes them generally available, reduces
the load of FAQ maintainers, and enters them into the periodic posting
archives.
Moderator: Robyn Kozierok
Type: Moderated.
misc.kids.consumers
Charter: Discussion of products related to kids.
Rationale: The volume on misc.kids is getting very high, with around
200 messages a day. Splitting off a few topics which could sustain
their own groups could make the volume on misc.kids more manageable.
misc.kids.consumers covers a sufficiently clearcut topic that it
can readily form its own group, and it represents about 9% of the
traffic on misc.kids. (The traffic estimates in this RFD are based
on two analyses of misc.kids traffic from April 16 to May 2.)
Type: Unmoderated.
misc.kids.health
Charter: Discussion of matters related to children's health.
Rationale: See rationale for misc.kids.consumer. Health related
topics cover about 8% of postings to misc.kids.
Type: Unmoderated.
misc.kids.pregnancy
Charter: Discussion of matters related to pregnancy, including
pre-pregnancy planning, infertility, childbirth, and the postpartum
period.
Rationale: See rationale for misc.kids.consumers. 13.4% of the
traffic on misc.kids.
Note: sci.med.pregnancy has also been proposed. This is a separate
proposal, not necessarily competing with misc.kids.pregnancy.
sci.med.pregnancy would cover the medical aspects of pregnancy.
misc.kids.pregnancy would be a non-technical group in which people
could share a variety of concerns about pregnancy (topics discussed
in misc.kids have included some medical topics, like gestational
diabetes, but also some distinctly non-medical ones, such as
where to find maternity clothing, and what people call their
babies in utero). Both sci.med.pregnancy and misc.kids.pregnancy
are being pursued as separate RFDs (to proceed to separate votes).

CHARTERS
misc.kids.info
Charter: For the periodic posting of informational posts and FAQ files
related to groups in the misc.kids hierarchy. Occasional one-time
announcements of interest to misc.kids readers (such as juvenile product
recall, misc.kids picnics or photoalbums) may be crossposted here from
misc.kids (and/or the appropriate subgroup(s)). However, as a low volume
newsgroup, birth announcements, etc. are not appropriate for this group.
Posts to this group should be informational; discussion and questions
will not appear here. No advertising. Posters should be aware that the
moderator cannot do distributions for other regions, and that there may
be moderation delays.
Rationale: There are more than sixty misc.kids FAQ files, and misc.kids
is a very high volume group. The primary reason that FAQ files have
not been posted on misc.kids on a regular basis is a concern over volume.
Having a separate newsgroups for the FAQs allows sites to determine if
they want to receive them, yet makes them generally available, reduces
the load of FAQ maintainers, and enters them into the periodic posting
archives. The custom already followed in other Usenet hierarchies
(such as rec.music, rec.radio, rec.arts.anime, rec.arts.comics, and
rec.arts.startrek) is to put such FAQ postings in a .info group, and
also have that group allow some one time informational postings, such
as news, so it is proposed that this group follow the same convention.
