I hereby propose a new newsgroup to be called news.reviews or something
similar. Here's my explanation:
It can be pretty hard, even for a moderately experienced net-news reader,
to find interesting newsgroups. Sure, if you're interested in a specific
subject, you search for keywords, but how are you just going to stumble
across an interesting chat group when there're so many? I propose that
we add a group for *reviews* of newsgroups, moderated of course, so that
people who think they've found a quality newsgroup can post a
full-fledged review... just like the movie reviews group and the Star
Trek reviews group: roadmaps to what's out there.
I realize that I of all people have next to no chance of being taken
seriously on this but, for those who care, this time I actually am
serious and would like to see a moderated news.reviews come into being.

Charters of news.groups.reviews and news.groups.questions:
The unmoderated group news.groups.questions is an appropriate
place to ask (and answer) questions about newsgroups, such as
which topics are discussed where, and how to start, find or
create groups or mailing lists for specific interests.
The moderated group news.groups.reviews features reviews of
other newsgroups. These need not be prompted by a question
in the questions group. The intention is simply to help people
find interesting newsgroups -- even those that they would not
have thought to ask about.

Why create these groups at all?
Many little-known yet worthwhile newsgroups and mailing lists languish
on the Net. Short of annoying postings to dozens of newsgroups in an
attempt to contact potential readers, there's no way to reach people
with word of interesting groups you've found.
Meanwhile, potential readers moan about the lack of interesting (or at
least funny) groups because they don't know where to find them.
Helping people find useful groups and funny groups and so forth is a
worthwhile purpose.
The charter (above) will be posted monthly, along with the
submission guidelines below.
The discussion will continue in news.groups for a short while;
then the call for votes will be posted. If you have suggestions,
it would therefore be wise to make them quickly.

Because many readers may still be new to netnews, it is important to
keep the volume of the group relatively low. One post per day would
be acceptable, and forty per week should be a maximum. Given these
guidelines, it may become necessary to delay or even reject some
reviews. If you would like your review published, please follow
these suggestions:
Reviews should be written by people who read and enjoy the group in
question. If the reviewed group isn't worth reading, then ignorance
is indeed bliss.
Reviews should be one-time things. In a year, it might be worth
reviewing again, but the group shouldn't change very much in a week.
I will accept alternate reviews from different reviewers, if they
are substantially different, but I would prefer to review another
as-yet-unreviewed group. news.groups.reviews will not be a
discussion forum, so it may be worth running your review by
other readers first -- particularly if it is a second review.
Questions about "Where can I find a group about X?" should be sent
to news.groups.questions. Discussion of the review should normally
take place in the reviewed group itself. As these types of
followups are very different, followup will usually be set to
poster. Anything that shows up in the submission mailbox is
fair game for posting to either news.groups.reviews or the
unmoderated news.groups.questions. I will make an effort
to ensure that I'm sending it to the right place -- usually,
by replying to the submission.
Reviews of (publicly accessible) mailing lists are fine, but
interested readers are also directed to the short summaries available
elsewhere. If you would like one of these list of lists, Stephanie da
Silva, arielle@taronga.com posts one to news.lists. If it has expired
on your site, you can get it by anonymous ftp to rtfm.mit.edu from
/pub/usenet/news.lists/P_A_M_L,_P_*_8 where * represents each of the
numbers 1 through 8. [I am willing to add pointers to other lists of
lists, if someone gives me step-by-step instructions for getting them.]
In your review, please try to express the flavor of the group as a
whole. Ideally, this will involve summarizing some recent threads,
so that potential readers will have an example as well as a description.
Reviews need not be restricted to the big 7 -- if the group widely
available (eg, bionet, or eunet) that is sufficient. Reviewed mailing
lists should be open to all readers without restriction.

Note that the Description: line is copied straight from
/usr/lib/news/newsgroups, and the FAQ-Location: line is
in URL format. While not mandatory, this is certainly

debunking pervasive rumors and half-truths known collectively as urban
legends. Humorous and informative, the group also talks about the works
of urban legend researchers such as Cecil Adams and Jan Harold Brunvand.
Posters often ask innocuous-looking questions in order to bait newbies, so
followup with care and read the FAQ list before posting; it is very wide-
ranging and will answer most of your questions.

news.groups.questions Where can I find talk about topic X?

CHARTER
The unmoderated group news.groups.questions is an appropriate place to
ask (and answer) questions about newsgroups, such as which topics are
discussed where, and how to start, find or create groups or mailing
lists for specific interests.
The moderated group news.groups.reviews features reviews of other
newsgroups. These need not be prompted by a question in the questions
group. The intention is simply to help people find interesting
newsgroups -- even those that they would not have thought to ask
about.
These groups are the result of discussion of news.reviews. The
proposed moderator for news.groups.reviews is Jim Jewett
<jewett+@pitt.edu>.
The charter (above) will be posted monthly, along with the
submission guidelines below.

Because many readers may still be new to netnews, it is important to
keep the volume of the group relatively low. One post per day would
be acceptable, and forty per week should be a maximum. Given these
guidelines, it may become necessary to delay or even reject some
reviews. If you would like your review published quickly, please
follow these suggestions:
Reviews should be written by people who read and enjoy the group in
question. If the reviewed group isn't worth reading, then ignorance
is indeed bliss.
Reviews should be one-time things. In a year, it might be worth
reviewing again, but the group shouldn't change very much in a week.
I will accept alternate reviews from different reviewers, if they are
substantially different, but I would prefer to review another
as-yet-unreviewed group. news.groups.reviews will not be a discussion
forum, so it may be worth running your review by other readers first
-- particularly if it is a second review.
Questions about "Where can I find a group about X?" should be sent to
news.groups.questions. Discussion of the review should normally take
place in the reviewed group itself. As these types of followups are
very different, followup will usually be set to poster. Anything that
shows up in the submission mailbox is fair game for posting to either
news.groups.reviews or the unmoderated news.groups.questions. I will
make an effort to ensure that I'm sending it to the right place --
usually, by replying to the submission.
Reviews of (publicly accessible) mailing lists are fine, but
interested readers are also directed to the short summaries available
elsewhere. If you would like one of these lists of lists, Stephanie
da Silva, arielle@taronga.com posts one to news.lists. If it has
expired on your site, you can get it by anonymous ftp to rtfm.mit.edu

In your review, please try to express the flavor of the group as a
whole. Ideally, this will involve summarizing some recent threads, so
that potential readers will have an example as well as a description.
Reviews need not be restricted to the big 7 -- if the group is widely
available (eg, bionet, or eunet) that is sufficient. Reviewed mailing
lists should be open to all readers without restriction.
Here is a sample review, written by Vance Kochenderfer.
Note that the Description: line is copied straight from
/usr/lib/news/newsgroups, and the FAQ-Location: line is
in URL format. While not mandatory, this is certainly
encouraged.

Have you ever wondered about that dying boy in England who wants get-well
cards? Or about lick-and-stick tattoos laced with LSD? Or about all of
those soda can tabs you've been donating for kidney patients? Read a.f.u
and wonder no more. This group is dedicated to discussing and often
debunking pervasive rumors and half-truths known collectively as urban
legends. Humorous and informative, the group also talks about the works
of urban legend researchers such as Cecil Adams and Jan Harold Brunvand.
Posters often ask innocuous-looking questions in order to bait newbies, so
followup with care and read the FAQ list before posting; it is very wide-
ranging and will answer most of your questions.
