RFD: FORMAL Request for Discussion
This is a formal request for discussion of the creation of the newsgroup
rec.animals.wildlife.
Group name: rec.animals.wildlife
Status: unmoderated
Distribution: world wide
Summary: open to discussion of all issues and topics pertaining
to wildlife
Proposed by: Ronda DeVold
licenced wildlife rehabilitator, biologist, and
registered veterinary technologist
Fargo, North Dakota
email: devold@badlands.nodak.edu
CHARTER / RATIONALE:
This newsgroup will be open to discussion of all topics relating to
wildlife. Surveying the current newsgroups (especially the animal-oriented
ones), there are frequently questions and comments relating to wildlife.
Often, once sees articles posted such as "what do I do about an injured
baby bird that I found?" Or even, "what is the prevalence of rabies in
the local skunk population?" etc. etc. Often, these topics are NOT
relevant to the group's main focus, but the posters must feel that in
these groups, someone who is interested in animals might know something
to answer their questions.
This newsgroup could be a place where those interested in wildlife
topics of any kind could talk about various issues, get wildlife
questions answered, converse with those involved in wildlife fields
professionally, discuss scientific issues, and so on. This could include
discussions by wildlife biologists, zoologists, and wildlife
rehabilitators. There are not currently any groups that specifically
allow these possibilities. This newsgroup would be a "companion" group
to the mailing list "wlrehab" which was recently created to meet
the specific needs of professional wildlife rehabilitators. Having the
newsgroup rec.animals.wildlife would allow a mechanism for the general
public (and professionals) to get their questions answered and to discuss
pertinent topics.
NOTE: The name of this group was discussed and approved by the
individuals on "group-advice". They felt that the new second level
hierarchy "rec.animals." would be appropriate for this group and would
be a good second level "growth line" for the rec. group.
DISCUSSION:
The discussion period for the creation of this group will be underway
for the next 21-30 days. During this time, responses to the creation of
this group will be gathered. To comment on this proposed group, please
post directly to "news.groups".
At the end of the 30 days, there will be a call for votes (CFV). If
there are 100 or more people (and a majority) who vote "YES" for the
creation of this group rec.animals.wildlife, it will then be created.
Again, please address any comments to "news.groups".

WILDLIFE NEWSGROUP PROPOSAL (RFD is after the "changes" section)
========================================================================
Changes in this 2nd RFD that are new:
1. The proposed name of this newsgroup is "rec.animals.wildlife"
(This is the name that the Call For Votes (CFV) will go out with)
** The following are the reasons I have gone with the proposed name.
After much thought about this on my part (after lengthy discussion
of it in "news.groups"), I feel that this name would serve the
highest purpose all around. A wildlife newsgroup is definitely
needed to fill a void in the newsgroups. However, there is not really a
"good" 1st level group to put it under. The "sci" groups were my first
thought, but it was noted to me that the discussion in the wildlife group
would not be all of a scientific nature, therefore, it would not be
appropriate. The "misc" group would be "OK", but others do not think
so. They like to keep the misc. groups to a minimum, and they are often
not looked at frequently. Although a "rec." placing is not optimum
either, it is perhaps the best placing. Many people do deal with
wildlife in a "recreational" way, be it in watching wildlife,
participating in wildlife rehabilitation, etc. The rec. placing near all
of the other animal groups (most of them) would make it easy for readers
to choose the appropriate group. The new second level hiearchy ".animals"
would definately help in proper placement of this wildlife group in the
rec. hiearchy as well.
Notes on the ".animals" part of the proposal: This new second level
hiearchy would be a help in providing a place for FUTURE newsgroups that
deal with animals. Otherwise, as some have suggested, there could be
many groups such as rec.animal-health, rec.guinea-pigs, rec.ferrets, etc.
Rec.animals.* could be a place to put these FUTURE groups. Please note
that it would be TOTALLY up to groups that presently exist as to whether
or not they would like to be in this new hiearchy. This proposal is NOT
attempting to affect current groups in any way.
(possible additional groups) rec.animals.health
rec.animals.welfare
rec.animals.breeding
rec.animals.husbandry
rec.animals.misc
*(the following is the same as in the 2nd RFD posting)
2. Specific advice for exclusion of the following topics (and more
appropriate places to post these topics):
TOPIC: APPROPRIATE GROUP TO POST TO:
animal rights issues talk.politics.animals
hunting/fishing rec.hunting
wildlife as pets rec.pets (possibly) or alt.wolves, etc.
3. Request to refrain from cross-posting to related groups (ex: to sci.*
groups, to rec.pets* groups, etc.) An exception would be if your post
could ONLY be answered by someone say, that is a professional biologist
(as an example).
4. Suggestions for possible future subgroups under rec.animals.wildlife
- rec.animals.wildlife.rehab
- rec.animals.wildlife.conservation
- rec.animals.wildlife.captive
- rec.animals.wildlife.observation
The above modifications were made as a result of many suggestions posted
to news.groups after the original RFD and 2nd RFD were posted. (Thank you
everyone for your suggestions.)
