REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
This is a formal Request for Discussion for the creation of a new
newsgroup under the rec.* hierarchy. This RFD is being cross posted
to rec.arts.sf.written, rec.arts.books, rec.arts.sf.announce,
rec.arts.sf.misc, and news.announce.newgroups. Discussion of this
RFD is to take place in news.groups.
NAME: rec.arts.books.robert-jordan
STATUS: Unmoderated
One line description for the List of Active Newsgroups:
rec.arts.books.robert-jordan - Discussion of SF writer Robert Jordan
RATIONALE:
For the last several months, a significant proportion of the traffic
in rec.arts.sf.written has been concerned with various discussions
relating to the works of Robert Jordan. The large amount and consistency
of the Robert Jordan discussions would tend to indicate that there is
a need for a group specifically related to the author's works.
The proposed placement of the group is in the rec.art.books hierarachy,
which juxtaposes it with rec.arts.books.tolkien, the group that is
dedicated to the discussion of the works of the fantasy writer J.R.R.
Tolkien.
PROPOSED CHARTER:
rec.arts.sf.jordan is a forum for the discussion of all issues relating
to the works of the SF author Robert Jordan. Discussions of other
authors and works should be limited to how they relate to the works
of Robert Jordan.
TOPICS OF DISCUSSION:
The placement of the group:
As mentioned, the placement of the group has precedent, as the tolkien
group is also below rec.arts.books on the hierarchy. However, the group
could also be placed in the rec.arts.sf.* hierarchy, or even directly
below rec.arts.sf.written. Interested parties should discuss the best
place for the group to reside (rec.arts.books.robert-jordan,
rec.arts.sf.robert-jordan, rec.arts.sf.written.rober-jordan, or other).
The name of the group:
An alternate name for the group might be rec.arts.books.jordan; which
is preferred?
PROCESS:
The normal group creation guidelines will be followed. Discussion will
continue for 30 days from this posting, and after that, a Call for Votes
(CFV) will be posted if appropriate.

REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION
Group Name: rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan
Status: unmoderated
Distribution: world-wide
Summary: books by contemporary author Robert Jordan
Proposed by: Bill Garrett (garrett@cs.unc.edu)
This is a formal Request for Discussion (RFD) for the creation of an
unmoderated newsgroup, rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan.
CHARTER
rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan will be an unmoderated newsgroup for
the general discussion of books written by contemporary author Robert
Jordan (actually a pseudonym for James Rigney). In particular, this
newsgroup will be concerned with his ongoing "Wheel of Time" series,
but will also cover past and future works by him.
BACKGROUND
Robert Jordan's books have been discussed daily on rec.arts.sf.written
for more than two years, and the traffic due to these discussions has
been quite substantial at times. I have measured traffic for the
period of 5/1/94 - 5/31/94 and counted a weekly average of 1027
articles on rec.arts.sf.written received at my site, of which an
average 212 per week have directly concerned Robert Jordan's series,
and 20 per week (average) concerned various discussions and flamewars
related to moving the Robert Jordan traffic elsewhere.
I can personally vouch (but without hard numbers) that traffic has at
times been much higher than this. I estimate that it exceeded two
thirds of a 150+ message/day stream for several months last fall,
following the release of Robert Jordan's latest book.
RATIONALE
Even 200 messages per week (a low- to average level of Robert Jordan
traffic I've observed over the past ten months) is clearly substantial
enough to warrant a separate newsgroup. The resulting decrease in
rec.arts.sf.written traffic will also be a boon to all who read the
group; many have voiced concerns that traffic is too high and that
much of the Robert Jordan discussion is fairly particular to the
books, and thus (arguably) not entirely appropriate to
rec.arts.sf.written.
Prior to launching this RFD, I conducted a straw poll in the group
rec.arts.sf.written, asking who would support the creation of the
proposed group, and who would oppose it. Of the 141 votes I received,
125 said they'd support it and 16 said they'd oppose it. Adequate
support exists to make this RFD and (later) CFV viable.
Indeed, the Robert Jordan fans on r.a.sf.w have practically formed
their own subgroup already. For more than a year they have maintained
their own Robert Jordan FAQ, which includes contributions from over
100 people. Mailing lists have been formed on Internet, AOL, and
other networks.
One concern that will inevitably be raised with this proposal is that
this group deals with a single author. Specifically, the concerns are
short- and long-term sustainability: will there be enough traffic to
warrant the group; and will this traffic last, or is it just a fad?
I've already shown (and any r.a.sf.w reader can attest) that there is
sufficent traffic today to warrant a separate newsgroup, and there has
been for almost two years. The series of books currently discussed
will not be finished for at least another two years (based on word
>from the author and his publisher), and discussion will certainly not
stop with the release of the final book in the series. Robert Jordan
will continue writing after that -- and here I paraphrase his words --
"until they nail his coffin shut."
NAMING
Above, I proposed the group as rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan.
This name indicates that the Robert Jordan discussion concerns written
speculative fiction, and shows that the .r-j group is formed partly as
a relief valve for an overburdened r.a.sf.w group.
Others (myself included) have suggested rec.arts.books.robert-jordan.
This might be a better choice because Robert Jordan's writing is not
(and will not be) limited to speculative fiction. RJ has published
westerns, international intrigue, and historical fiction, as well as
literary reviews and criticism. A r.a.b.r-j group would avoid adding
another five-level group in rec.arts.sf and would fit in alongside
rec.arts.books.tolkien.
Many have suggested shortening the name to *.jordan instead of
*.robert-jordan. We think the longer name is necessary to distinguish
the group from other possible meanings of "jordan", such as American
sports star Michael Jordan and the Middle-East country of Jordan.
Note that the subname robert-jordan conforms to Usenet name length
standards.
DISCUSSION
This RFD is being crossposted to news.announce.newgroups, news.groups,
and rec.arts.sf.written. Followups should be directed to news.groups.
The name for this group (suggestions outlined above) is one thing I'd
like to see addressed in this Discussion.
FOOTNOTE
Many people have provided suggestions incorporated into this article.
My thanks to all of you; you know who you are. This RFD has been
written in accordance with the Guidelines for Usenet Group Creation
and has been brought to you by the letter Q.

No.
Longer, more polite explanation: the sf in rec.arts.sf.written stands
for Speculative Fiction. SF includes both science fiction and fantasy.
Yes, we realize that this isn't as clear as it might be. When the groups
were formed, no-one could think of a better abbreviation.
The fantasy-science fiction split is a long-standing topic in the
hierarchy. No two people are able to agree on where the split occurs.
There are a number of well-known books and series that straddle whatever
line you might pick. Consensus in r.a.sf.* is that no such split is
possible without massive problems.
