This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the reorganization of
the unmoderated newsgroup, rec.food.cooking.
This RFD is being posted to news.announce.newgroups, news.groups,
rec.food.cooking, rec.food.drink, rec.food.historic, rec.food.recipes,
rec.food.sourdough, rec.food.veg and rec.food.veg.cooking, with followups
set to news.groups. All discussion regarding this proposal should take
place in news.groups.
Rationale: Rec.food.cooking has been a high-volume newsgroup for several
years, and the subject of splitting has been brought up with a fair amount
of regularity. Traditionally, rec.food.cooking has been an amazingly civil,
calm and flame-free newsgroup, so a split never seemed to be justified.
However, in recent weeks the noise level and number of inappropriate posts
has skyrocketed, and polite pointers to the FAQs (which usually did the
trick before) now go ignored or become targets for flames. I feel that
splitting rec.food.cooking will help bring back the focus that it once had.
Proposal: rec.food.cooking be split into 5 unmoderated groups:
rec.food.cooking.misc
rec.food.cooking.cookware
rec.food.cooking.recipes
rec.food.cooking.books
rec.food.cooking.discuss
Charters:
rec.food.cooking.misc (unmoderated)
What rfc used to be and should be. For general cooking discussion. This
newsgroup will replace rec.food.cooking.
rec.food.cooking.cookware (unmoderated)
Bread machines, microwaves, crockpots, knives, cutting boards, glass-top
stoves, barbecues, cast iron, woks, Calphalon, aluminum, dehydrators, pasta
makers, rice cookers, etc.
rec.food.cooking.recipes (unmoderated)
Recipes and requests. Before you say that this is redundant with
rec.food.recipes, from moderating rec.food.recipes, I've discovered
that crossposting between rec.food.cooking and rec.food.recipes is
virtually non-existent. Recipe management software discussion should
go in here as well.
rec.food.cooking.books (unmoderated)
Cookbooks, cookbook authors, tv shows.
rec.food.cooking.discuss (unmoderated)
For all the spam and tripe that currently plagues the group. For flames,
rumors, controversial topics (such as food poisoning), the $250 cookie,
and those threads that bear marginal relevance that seem to go on forever
like, "What did you have for dinner last night?" "What is your favourite
fast food restaurant?" "What is your least favourite fast food
restaurant?" Etc, etc.
Discussion will run for a minumum of 21 days. The newsgroups in this
proposal are subject to change, and if major changes are necessary, the
discussion period may be extended an additional 7 days.
A Call for Votes (CFV) will be posted after the end of the discussion period.
The vote will be run by a neutral third party.
This RFD attempts to fully comply with Usenet newsgroup creation guidelines
set in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup". Please refer to this document
if you have questions about the process.

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the reorganization of
the unmoderated newsgroup, rec.food.cooking.
This RFD is being posted to news.announce.newgroups, news.groups,
rec.food.cooking, rec.food.drink, rec.food.historic, rec.food.recipes,
rec.food.sourdough, rec.food.veg and rec.food.veg.cooking, with followups
set to news.groups. All discussion regarding this proposal should take
place in news.groups.
Rationale: Rec.food.cooking has been a very high volume newsgroup for
the past several years, and the subject of splitting has been brought
up with a fair amount of regularity. According to the July arbitron,
traffic for that month was 4351 articles, which is over 1000 articles
per week or approximately 145 articles per day.
Proposal: rec.food.cooking be split into 3 unmoderated groups:
rec.food.cooking.misc
rec.food.cooking.recipe-sources
rec.food.cooking.equipment
Charters:
rec.food.cooking.misc (unmoderated)
For general food and cooking discussion. Foods of all kinds, food
procurement, cooking methods and techniques, eating, etc. This newsgroup
would replace the existing rec.food.cooking.
rec.food.cooking.recipe-sources (unmoderated)
For cookbook recommendations, ratings of cookbook authors and televised
cooking shows, recipes and recipe requests, and recipe management software.
On the surface, this newsgroup may seem partially redundant with
rec.food.recipes. However, from moderating rec.food.recipes, I have
discovered that cross-posting between rec.food.cooking and rec.food.recipes
is virtually non-existant, indicating that the recipes traffic on each
newsgroup is independant of each other.
rec.food.cooking.equipment (unmoderated)
For frequently discussed equipment-related topics such as bread machines,
microwaves, crockpots, knives, cutting boards, glass-top stoves, barbecues,
cast iron, woks, Calphalon, aluminum cookware, dehydrators, pasta makers,
and rice cookers. Also for topics such as equipment sources, care and
repair, recommended brands of appliances to buy, etc.
Discussion will run for a minumum of 21 days. The newsgroups in this
proposal are subject to change, and if major changes are necessary, the
discussion period may be extended an additional 7 days.
A Call for Votes (CFV) will be posted after the end of the discussion period.
The vote will be run by a neutral third party.

unmoderated group rec.food.bread
unmoderated group rec.food.cooking.equipment
unmoderated group rec.food.cooking.marketplace
unmoderated group rec.food.cooking.books
unmoderated group rec.food.cooking.misc (renames rec.food.cooking)
This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the reorganization of
the unmoderated newsgroup, rec.food.cooking, plus the creation of two
additional food groups, rec.food.spicy and rec.food.bread.
This RFD is being posted to news.announce.newgroups, news.groups,
rec.food.cooking, rec.food.drink, rec.food.historic, rec.food.recipes,
rec.food.sourdough, rec.food.veg, rec.food.veg.cooking, alt.food.fat-free,
rec.food.preserving, rec.food.chocolate, alt.creative-cooking and
alt.cooking-chat with followups set to news.groups. All discussion
regarding this proposal should take place in news.groups.
RATIONALE
Rec.food.cooking is an extremely high volume newsgroup, with traffic
running close to 250 articles per day. Over the past year, traffic on
the newsgroup has almost doubled. The subject of splitting is brought
up often.
According to the July '94 arbitron, traffic for that month was 4351 articles.
According to the January '95 arbitron, traffic for that month was 6576
articles for a total of 10.0 megabytes.
According to the March '95 arbitron, traffic for that month was 7391 articles
for a total of 10.3 megabytes.
According to the May '95 arbitron, traffic for that month was 7483 articles
for a total of 10.8 megabytes.
While there is much valuable information to be found on the newsgroup, the
signal to noise ratio has shown a marked decline over the past year. With
increased off-topic chatter and trolls, the worth-while discussion becomes
harder to sift out and the newsgroup becomes less useful as a result.
>From informal discussion on rec.food.cooking, many have shown approval
for an .equipment newsgroup (a previous proposal for an .equipment group
failed by a narrow margin). Rec.food.spicy and rec.food.bread have been
oft requested over the past few years. In fact, rec.food.spicy has been
proposed and taken as far as a first RFD but unfortunately went no further
than that.
This proposal will hopefully alleviate many of the problems currently
afflicting rec.food.cooking and help bring back the focus the newsgroup
used to have.
Proposal: rec.food.cooking be split into 4 unmoderated groups:
rec.food.cooking.misc
rec.food.cooking.equipment
rec.food.cooking.books
rec.food.cooking.marketplace
plus the creation of 2 unmoderated groups:
rec.food.spicy
rec.food.bread
CHARTERS
rec.food.cooking.misc (unmoderated)
For general food and cooking discussion. Foods of all kinds, food
procurement, preparation, storage, cooking methods, techniques, eating,
etc. This newsgroup would replace the existing rec.food.cooking.
rec.food.cooking.equipment (unmoderated)
For frequently discussed equipment-related topics such as microwaves,
crockpots, knives, cutting boards, glass-top stoves, barbecues, woks,
cast iron, name brand cookware, aluminum cookware, dehydrators, pasta
makers, and rice cookers. Also for topics such as equipment sources,
care and repair, and recommended brands of appliances to buy.
rec.food.cooking.books (unmoderated)
For cookbook recommendations, comments and ratings of cookbook authors
and televised cooking shows, and recipe management software.
rec.food.cooking.marketplace (unmoderated)
For anyone interested in buying, selling or trading any food related
item. Commercial and/or blatant advertising is inappropriate and will
be discouraged.
rec.food.spicy (unmoderated)
Anything and everything relating to hot and spicy foods. This includes
traditionally spicy cuisines (Thai, Mexican, East Indian, etc), recipes
and cooking, different varieties of chiles, advice for growing chile
pepper plants, and procuring seeds and other appropriately spicy topics.
rec.food.bread (unmoderated)
All aspects of baking bread. Topics would include all kinds of breads
(yeast breads, quick breads and sweet breads), different types of
flours, yeasts, recipes, techniques, baking by hand as well as by
using a bread machine. Recommendations for and experiences with
different models of bread machines would go here as well.
Please refer to this document
if you have questions about the process.

articles for a total of 10.0 megabytes.
According to the March '95 report, traffic for that month was 7391 articles
for a total of 10.3 megabytes.
According to the May '95 report, traffic for that month was 7483 articles
for a total of 10.8 megabytes.
While there is much valuable information to be found on the newsgroup, the
signal to noise ratio has shown a marked decline over the past year. With
increased off-topic chatter and trolls, the worth-while discussion becomes
harder to sift out and the newsgroup becomes less useful as a result.
Many have shown approval for an .equipment newsgroup, if the informal
discussion that has taken place on rec.food.cooking is any indication.
Another indication is the previous proposal which failed by a narrow
margin (280 yes votes to 180 no votes).
Both rec.food.spicy and rec.food.bread have been oft requested over the
past few years as these topics have thriving traffic on respective mailing
lists. In addition, rec.food.spicy has been formally proposed and taken
as far as a first RFD but unfortunately went no further than that.
During the initial discussion phase, there has been concern expressed
that rec.food.bread is too close in scope to rec.food.sourdough. While
it is true they both have something to do with bread, there are many
types of breads that don't involve sourdough as well as many sourdough
topics that don't involve bread. More important, rec.food.sourdough is
an established, tightly focused, low volume newsgroup. Combining it
with another group at this time would most likely have a negative impact
on it. In this case, I believe the use of cross-posting and periodic
pointers from one group to the other will help head off any potential
confusion.
This proposal will hopefully alleviate many of the problems currently
afflicting rec.food.cooking and help bring back the focus the newsgroup
once had.
Proposal: rec.food.cooking be split into 5 unmoderated groups:
rec.food.cooking.misc
rec.food.cooking.equipment
rec.food.cooking.books+tv
rec.food.cooking.marketplace
rec.food.cooking.modified-diet
plus the creation of 2 unmoderated groups:
rec.food.spicy+hot
rec.food.bread
CHARTERS
rec.food.cooking.misc (unmoderated)
For general food and cooking discussion. Foods of all types, food
procurement, preparation, storage, cooking methods, techniques, eating,
etc. This newsgroup would replace the existing rec.food.cooking.
rec.food.cooking.equipment (unmoderated)
For frequently discussed equipment-related topics including (but not
limited to) microwaves, crockpots, knives, cutting boards, glass-top
stoves, barbecues, woks, cast iron, name brand cookware, aluminum
cookware, dehydrators, pasta makers, and rice cookers. Also for topics
such as equipment sources, care and repair, and recommended brands of
appliances to buy.
rec.food.cooking.books+tv (unmoderated)
For cookbook recommendations, comments and ratings of cookbook authors
and televised cooking shows, and recipe management software.
rec.food.cooking.marketplace (unmoderated)
For anyone interested in buying, selling or trading any food related
item. For organized food swaps. Pointers to WWW sites, ftp archives,
and announcements of new Web pages, mailing lists, etc, would go here
as well. Off-topic or flagrant advertising is inappropriate and will
be discouraged.
rec.food.cooking.modified-diet (unmoderated)
A place for exchanging recipes and cooking tips for people who are on
restricted diets for any reason. This includes but is not limited to
low-calorie, low-fat, low-sodium, low-sugar/diabetic, and food allergy
related diets, such as gluten-free, wheat-free, etc.
rec.food.spicy+hot (unmoderated)
Anything and everything relating to hot and spicy foods. This includes
traditionally spicy cuisines (Thai, Mexican, East Indian, etc), recipes,
cooking, different varieties of hot peppers/capsicums, advice for growing
hot pepper plants, restaurant recommendations, ratings of commercially
available hot sauces, procuring seeds, and other appropriately spicy
topics.
rec.food.bread (unmoderated)
All aspects of baking bread. Topics would include all kinds of breads
(yeast breads, quick breads and sweet breads), different types of
flours, yeasts, recipes, techniques, baking by hand and especially
baking bread in a bread machine. Recommendations for and experiences
with different models of bread machines would go here as well.
Meta-discussions about whether baking by hand is better than baking
with a bread machine are inappropriate and should be avoided.

RATIONALE (Submitted by the proposer)
Rec.food.cooking is an extremely high volume newsgroup, with traffic
running close to 250 articles per day. Over the past year, traffic on
the newsgroup has almost doubled, and the subject of splitting is
brought up frequently. While there is still much valuable information
in the newsgroup, the signal to noise ratio has shown a marked decline
over the past year. With increased off-topic chatter and trolls, the
worth-while discussion becomes harder to sift out, reducing the
effectiveness of the newsgroup.
Many have shown interest in an .equipment newsgroup, if the informal
discussion that has taken place on rec.food.cooking is any indication.
Another sign is that the previous proposal failed only by the 2/3 rule
(280 yes votes to 180 no votes).
Both rec.food.bread and rec.food.spicy+hot (formerly rec.food.spicy)
have been oft requested over the past few years. These two topics
have thriving traffic in popular mailing lists. In addition,
rec.food.spicy has been formally proposed and taken as far as a first
RFD, but unfortunately went no further than that.
Other frequent topics include requests for recipes conforming to
specialized diets (low-fat, sugar-free, gluten-free,etc) which would
be covered in rec.food.cooking.modified-diets, and lively discussions
on cooking shows and cookbooks would fit well in rec.food.books+tv.
The cooking newsgroup attracts numerous vendors and postings about web
sites, so rec.food.cooking.marketplace would be an ideal place for
these topics.
CHARTERS
rec.food.spicy+hot
Anything and everything relating to hot and spicy foods. This includes
traditionally spicy cuisines (Thai, Mexican, East Indian, etc), recipes,
cooking, different varieties of chiles, advice for growing hot pepper
plants, restaurant recommendations, ratings of commercially available
hot sauces, procuring seeds and other appropriately spicy topics.

item. For organized food swaps. Pointers to WWW sites, ftp archives,
and announcements of new Web pages, mailing lists, etc, would go here
as well. Off-topic or flagrant advertising is inappropriate and will

rec.food.cooking.books+tv

and televised cooking shows, and recipe management software.
rec.food.cooking.modified-diet

restricted diets for any reason. This includes but is not limited to
low-calorie, low-fat, low-sodium, low-sugar/diabetic, and food allergy
related diets, such as gluten-free, wheat-free, etc.
rec.food.cooking.misc (replaces rec.food.cooking)
For general food and cooking discussion. Foods of all types, food
procurement, preparation, storage, cooking methods, techniques, eating,
etc. This newsgroup would replace the existing rec.food.cooking.
