AN OFFICIAL REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD) PERTAINING TO A NEW
NEWSGROUP-- REC.FOOD.PRESERVATION
Name: rec.food.preservation
Status: Unmoderated
Distribution: Worldwide
Proponent: Leslie E. Basel <leb@ccit.arizona.edu>
Summary: Discussions on the techniques, equipment, and recipes
for the preservations of foodstuffs, herbs, and medicinals.
Allied groups: rec.food.cooking, rec.gardens, rec.food.historic,
rec.food.sourdough
CHARTER
Rec.food.preservation is a newsgroup for the discussion of
recipies, equipment, and techniques of food preservation.
Current food preservation techniques that rightly should
be discussed in this forum include canning, freezing,
dehydration, pickling, smoking, salting, distilling, and
potting. Foodstuffs are defined as produce (both fruits
and vegetables), meat, fish, dairy products, culinary and
medicinal herbs.
RATIONALE
Persons interested in food preservation as described above
must follow at least four newsgroups: rec.food.cooking,
rec.food.recipies, rec.gardens, and rec.food.historic. It
would benefit the rec.food.* community if the experiences
and expertise of the food preservers were consolidated into
one USENET newsgroup.
Interest and support has been uniformly positive, particularly in
rec.gardens, where I have noticed an increase in the number
of questions on the production of herbs, berries, and tomatoes.
In several months, successful gardeners _will_ be looking
for advice on how to "put up" their bounty. Already more
interest in canning and "jamming" has appeared since this
group has been suggested in rec.food.cooking.
ARCHIVES
Lawrence London, at sunSITE.unc.edu, has expressed an interest
in archiving discussions and FAQs from rec.food.preservation
at sunSITE.
DISCUSSION
This RFD is posted to news.announce.newgroups, and should be
crossposted to news.groups, rec.food.cooking, rec.gardens, rec.
food.historic, and rec.food.sourdough.
Discussions for/against rec.food.preservation should be forwarded to
news.groups. Discussions about rec.food.preservation should last
between 21-30 days; objections and comments will be incorporated into
the RFD.
This RFD has been made in concordance with the guidelines
"How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup".
