REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
moderated group rec.food.cooking.vegetables
This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a
moderated Usenet newsgroup rec.food.cooking.vegetables. This is not a
Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time. Procedural
details are below.
Proposed newsgroup: rec.food.cooking.vegetables, a moderated
information forum for discussing topics related to the preparation and
eating of vegetables such as:
- cooking techniques
- recipes
- history
- folklore
- source recommendations
- effects on health
Newsgroups line:
rec.food.cooking.vegetables Preparation and eating of vegetables. (Moderated)
RATIONALE: rec.food.cooking.vegetables
The amount of vegetables prepared and eaten daily is staggering. For
instance, approximately $2 billion dollars worth of frozen vegetables
are consumed in the United States annually (Source: Information
Resources Inc., 1998).
The large volume of postings in rec.food.cooking -- often times
exceeding 200 messages per day -- suggests a split might be
appropriate. A search of recent postings to rec.food.cooking using
DejaNews on February 13, 1999 using the word "vegetable" and several
other common vegetable names (carrot, corn, bean, potato, etc.),
showed that approximately 20% of the postings were vegetable
related. It can therefore be concluded that there is a large enough
audience in rec.food.cooking alone to justify the creation of
rec.food.cooking.vegetables (not including those posts to rec.food.veg
and rec.food.veg.cooking).
Also, a significant amount of discussion goes on in the vegetarian
newsgroups rec.food.veg and rec.food.veg.cooking. The proposed
moderated newsgroup would serve as a central location for both
vegetarians and non-vegetarians to discuss vegetables and their
preparation, creating a more informative, well-rounded list of
postings of benefit to all vegetable lovers.
CHARTER: rec.food.cooking.vegetables
Articles suitable for posting to rec.food.cooking.vegetables are those
pertaining to any topic related to the preparation and eating of
vegetables.
Expected topics of discussion include (but are not limited to):
* Cooking techniques
* Recipes
* History
* Folklore
* Source recommendations
* Effects on health
Inappropriate posts would include:
* Advertising. This newsgroup allows those knowledgable about the
cooking of vegetables to help those who share questions, comments,
or concerns with the group. This is NOT a forum for blatant
advertising and commercial interests and such posts will NOT be
welcome. If you have a product or service to sell, please post
your message in other, more appropriate locations, such as
rec.food.marketplace.
* Inappropriate behavior. Inappropriate posts, spamming,
advertisement, foul language, or innuendos that are disrespectful
of the other users or groups of people.
Moderation policies:
The moderators will abide by the following policies:
* The moderators will be unbiased in their approval and rejection of
postings.
* The moderators will work to ensure that the quality of discussions
are kept high and free of unsolicited advertising
* The moderators will reject articles that do not conform to this
charter.
Gateway:
This newsgroup will have a gateway to a dedicated mailing list so that
people who do not have access to Usenet newsgroups will be able to
read and post messages to the newsgroup via e-mail.
END CHARTER.

warrants it. Please do not attempt to vote until this happens.
