REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION
on the creation of
SCI.ASTRO.AMATEUR
RATIONALE
A USENET newsgroup solely dedicated to the discussion of topics of
interest to amateur (or "backyard") astronomers does not currently
exist. Such discussions are currently carried out on sci.astro. The
volume of traffic on sci.astro, however, has recently grown to the point
where many people believe that a new group dedicated to the discussion
of amateur astronomy would be beneficial. Additionally, many readers of
sci.astro have expressed frustration at having to wade through the more
technical posts on the sciences of astronomy and cosmology to get to the
ones dealing with amateur astronomy.
GROUP NAME
The consensus of opinion seems to be that sci.astro.amateur would be the
best name for this new group. A few other names have been suggested:
sci.astro.observe, sci.astro.backyard, and rec.astronomy. While
sci.astro.amateur does seem to be the most appropriate name, the merits
of these other group names should be discussed.
PROPOSED CHARTER
The new group will be unmoderated and distributed worldwide.
Topics appropriate for this new group include, but are not limited to:
Observing
Using the naked eye, binoculars, or telescopes
The Moon, Planets, Stars, The Sun, Comets, Deep Sky Objects,
Constellations, et. al.
Equipment
Choosing Telescopes/Binoculars
Choosing Accessories (Finders, Drives, Eyepieces, Filters,
Observatories, etc.)
Astrophotography
Traditional
CCD
Image Processing
Astronomy Software
Planetarium Programs
Deep Sky Programs
Observatory Programs
Educational Programs
Tips & Techniques for Amateur Astronomers
Books For Amateur Astronomers
As noted above, posts dealing with the science of astronomy (or
cosmology) should be directed to sci.astro. For instance, a post asking
"How can I see/photograph the collision between Jupiter and comet
Shoemaker-Levy 9" would be appropriate for sci.astro.amateur,
while a post asking "What's going to happen when comet Shoemaker-Levy 9
collides with Jupiter," would be more appropriate for sci.astro.
CONCLUSION
This RFD is being submitted to news.announce.newgroups in compliance
with the guidelines set forth in "How To Create A USENET Newsgroup", by
Ken Kirksey <kkirksey@world.std.com>. It is being sent to sci.astro,
sci.astro.planetarium, sci.astro.research, and sci.space.science.
[[ news.announce.newgroups moderator's note: I did not have prior approval
for cross-posting to the later two moderated groups so it is being sent
to them separately. -- tale ]]
