Group Name: sci.bio.food-science
Status: Unmoderated
Distribution: World Wide
Summary: A newsgroup open to discussion of issues and topics
related to food science.
Proposed By: Rachel B Zemser <zemser@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu>
This is the official request for discussion (RFD) concerning the creation
of a new group called sci.bio.food-science. This RFD is being issued in
concordance with the guidelines set in the "How to create a new usenet
group" FAQ located in news.announce.newgroups. Please refer to this
article if you have any questions about the news group creation.
Discussion will take place in news.groups only for 21-30 days. If an
agreement about the group is made within this period, the RFD will be
followed with a call for votes (CFV). The CFV will be posted to the same
newsgroups as this RFD. Each group that passes, by receiving 100 more
YES votes than NO votes, and twice as many YES votes as NO votes, will be
created.
After much discussion with group advice and others, I have decided on
sci.bio.food-science. However since food science covers such a wide
range of topics, it might also fit well under sci.chem.* or
sci.agriculture.* hierarchies. Please feel free to express a preference
during the discussion period. I would like to see this group as
sci.food-science, but creation of a second-level newsgroup has been
discouraged.
RATIONALE:
Food Science integrates knowledge from several scientific disciplines
including: chemistry, physics, microbiology, engineering, biotechnology,
nutrition and agriculture. Food Scientists apply their technical
knowledge to the processing, distribution and service of safe, nutritious,
high quality food that meets the consumer's desires at the lowest possible
cost.
It is important that the food scientist know the physical and chemical
properties of food, its chemical components, and how food interacts with
the environment. Because of the broad range of knowledge that is needed
in this field, a forum for the scientific discussion of food is necessary
as a means to serve the needs of food scientists around the world.
There are several sci.newsgroups already in existence that include topics
related to food science. With food science topics being discussed on
different newsgroups, it is difficult for a food scientist to keep up with
the latest information without having to read all the different sci.groups.
A newsgroup solely dedicated to food science would serve as a place where
academic researchers, students, industry professionals, and the general
public can meet, interact, and discuss the latest issues in food science.
CHARTER:
The goals of this newsgroup are:
1. To discuss topics and issues related to food chemistry, food
microbiology, food engineering/processing, food biotechnology,
dairy science, agriculture, fermentation, nutrition, toxicology,
and food safety.
2. To share experimental methods and improved teaching techniques.
3. To announce scholarships, fellowships, assistantships, and other
academic positions within food science departments.
4. To make available, and answer questions about abstracts of papers
for publication or presentations.
5. To announce professional meetings world wide.
6. To discuss general areas of interest inside food science.
NOTE: Commercial advertisements may not be posted the proposed group.
However, the food companies are welcome to post questions and
comments about food research.
DISTRIBUTION:
This RFD has been cross posted to the following groups:
news.announce.newgroups, news.groups,
sci.agriculture, sci.bio.technology, sci.engr.chem, sci.med.nutrition
sci.chem, sci.bio, sci.bio.microbiology, rec.food.cooking

HOW TO VOTE
Send MAIL to: voting@Syra.NET
Just Replying should work if you are not reading this on a mailing list.
Your mail message should contain one of the following statements:
I vote YES on sci.bio.food-science
I vote NO on sci.bio.food-science
I vote ABSTAIN on sci.bio.food-science
I CANCEL my vote on sci.bio.food-science
Neither ABSTAIN nor CANCEL messages are counted as votes; they serve
only to cancel any previous vote. Abstentions are noted in the final
vote list, whereas CANCEL removes your vote from that list entirely.
(This is the only difference between the two.)
Anything else may be rejected by the automatic vote counting program. The
votetaker will respond to your received ballots with a personal acknowledge-
ment by mail - if you do not receive one within several days, try again.
It's your responsibility to make sure your vote is registered correctly.
If you later change your mind you may vote again; only your last valid
vote will count.
Standard Guidelines for voting apply: no more than one vote per person,
no more than one vote per account. If you attempt multiple votes or
other vote fraud, all your votes may be canceled and your name published.
The complete vote list will be posted with the vote result, including
how each person voted. Note that Usenet votes are not done by secret
ballot.
There will then be a five-day period during which the published vote
list may be corrected and any irregularities addressed. The
requirements for group creation are 100 more YES votes than NO votes,
and 2/3 of all counted votes being YES.
