Group Name: sci.lang.translation
Status: Unmoderated
Distribution: Worldwide
Summary: Forum for those interested in the problems, issues and
concerns of translators/interpreters.
Proposed by: James Hester
Rationale:
----------
There has been some discussion recently in 'sci.lang' on the
creation of a translation newsgroup. A mailing list, LANTRA-L,
already exists for professional translators. However, recent high
traffic on this mailing list has prompted calls for a newsgroup to be
created to facilitate processing of the large number of messages.
Charter
-------
The proposed group would provide a forum for those interested in the
problems, issues and concerns of translators/interpreters. Examples
of topics appropriate to this group are:
* Automated translation software
* Translation methods
* Membership of professional bodies
* Accreditation of professional translators/interpreters
* International standards for translators/interpreters
* Discussion of dictionaries for a given language pair
* Software for displaying foreign character sets
* Translation requests for passages/words/phrases for a given language
pair
* Reviews of translated works
* Training and education of translators/interpreters
This RFD is being posted to: sci.lang
news.announce.newgroups
news.groups
mailing list LANTRA-L
Please post it to any other groups who might be interested.
Discussion of this proposal will last for at least 3 weeks. If a
charter is agreed upon, a call for votes (CFV) lasting a further 3
weeks will be conducted by a neutral third party. Details will be
posted when and if this is about to occur.
