This is a Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of
the new newsgroups sci.math.educational and sci.math.recreational 
(unmoderated). 

NEWSGROUPS:

  sci.math.educational (sci.math.undergrad?)
  sci.math.recreational

STATUS:

  Unmoderated 

PURPOSE:

    The newsgroup sci.math.educational would be a forum for issues
  related to undergraduate mathematics and related topics like
  mathematical education, textbooks and problems at the undergrad level. 
  (Sci.math.undergrad has been proposed as an alternative name).

  The newsgroup sci.math.recreational would be a forum for problems
  of recreational interest and for amusement purposes. Jokes, anecdotes
  and mathematical trivia should also be part of this newsgroup.

RATIONALE:

    Over the last month, consensus seems to have it that sci.math should be
  split.  Amongst the reasons put forward for this decision are:

  - High Traffic Volume. To date, sci.math is the second ranked 
    sci.* newsgroup by number of readers. It ranks 133 by traffic
    volume in Kbytes and 113 by number of articles, out of 1,876
    total newsgroups.

  - Clear separation of interests between recreational, educational and
    professional research in mathematics. 

  -These groups are to join the hierarchy of sci.math newsgroups:

     sci.math                                                     
     sci.math.num-analysis                                       
     sci.math.research                                        
     sci.math.stat                                              
     sci.math.symbolic                                         

  Upon creation of these newsgroups, discussion that used to take place
  in sci.math and covered by the charter of the new newsgroups should be
  encouraged to move to the approppriate forum.

NEWSGROUP CREATION:

  The discussion period will be from 15 February 1993 to 17 March 1993.

  Please post all discussion in "news.groups".

  If a consensus is reached by the end of the discussion period,
  a CFV (Call for Votes) will be posted at that time.

This is a second Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of
the new newsgroups sci.math.college, sci.math.edu, and sci.math.rec
(unmoderated). The response to the first RFD was overwhelmingly
positive. It was properly noticed that educational and recreational 
are typically shortened to rec and edu. Moreover a distinction 
between college/undergrad mathematics and educational issues seemed
to be in place.

NEWSGROUPS:

  sci.math.college
  sci.math.edu
  sci.math.rec

STATUS:

  Unmoderated 

PURPOSE:

    The newsgroup sci.math.edu would be a forum for issues related to
  the teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels, from 
  elementary to college education. In particular this newsgroup 
  will be a one-way gateway to existing listserv lists on topics
  like calculators in the classroom and K-12 math education.

  The newsgroup sci.math.college is a forum for the tens of thousands
  of undergrad students who are taking math courses and their 
  teachers. Material like textbook selection, problems and challenges
  are part of the chart of this newsgroup.

  The newsgroup sci.math.rec would be a forum for problems of
  recreational interest and for amusement purposes. Jokes, anecdotes
  and mathematical trivia should also be part of this newsgroup.
