REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
Newsgroup: soc.culture.dominican
Status: unmoderated
Distribution: worldwide
Proponent: Moyce R. Polanco (Polanco_Moyce@msmail.asd.k12.ak.us)
This is a formal Request for Discussion (RFD) on the creation
of an unmoderated newsgroup dedicated to the discussion of
issues related to the Dominican Republic.
This RFD has been posted in accordance with the guidelines set
in the "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" FAQ posted in
news.announce.newgroups. This RFD is being cross-posted to
the following relevant newsgroups:
soc.culture.caribbean
soc.culture.cuba
soc.culture.latin-america
soc.culture.puerto-rico
CHARTER
--------------
Soc.culture.dominican will be a newsgroup dedicated to the
discussion of issues related to the life and people of the
Dominican Republic. Discussions will include topics of the
country's history, social aspects, culture, politics, economics,
religion, education, technological developments, sports and
recreational activities. It is proposed that this group be
unmoderated but this option is left open for discussion in
accordance with the Guidelines for Newsgroup Creation.
Spanish is the official language of the Dominican Republic;
therefore, posts are expected to be in Spanish; however, posts
can also be made in English to allow for a wider variety of
participants.
RATIONALE
-----------------
There is an increasingly vast Dominican community connecting
to the Internet. Many of these users have migrated to populate
different areas of the world and in an attempt to keep in touch
to discuss matters pertaining to the Dominican Republic, have
resorted to e-mail lists, two of which are KISKEYA and SDOMINGO.
These two lists have over 230 subscribers combined. SDOMINGO,
which currently serves 127 members, has been recently closed
down leaving Dominicans and people interested in issues relating
to this country with the need to have more effective connection
by creating an open newsgroup in a wider pool. Right now many
Dominicans have been using other soc.culture... newsgroups to
post ideas and themes of this country. The creation of this
newsgroup would be a step forward for this community of users
to more openly communicate and share ideas about this beautiful
country.
PROCEDURE
-----------------
Please post any response to this message to NEWS.GROUPS. If
you use the followup feature on your newsreader this should
happen automatically. It is important to understand that all
discussions about the merits of this proposal should occur
on news.groups.
Unless the discussion indicates a need to resubmit a new RFD,
a Call for Votes (CFV) will be posted in approximately three
to four weeks after the posting of this RFD.
FUTURE CALL FOR VOTES
-------------------------------------
Please do not post any votes now. This is not a call for votes.
When the CFV is posted, instructions will be given on how to
mail your votes to the Usenet Volunteer Votetakes (UVV).

Newsgroup: soc.culture.dominican-rep
Status: unmoderated

This is a formal Request for Discussion (RFD) on the creation

soc.culture.caribbean
soc.culture.cuba
soc.culture.latin-america
soc.culture.puerto-rico
MODIFICATION
--------------
I, the proponent, have received a number of e-mail responses to
the original RFD with the suggestion that the name soc.culture.dominican
is very ambiguous since there are two countries in the caribbean
with similar name. Both the people of the Dominican Republic and
the People of Dominica are called Dominicans and this could be
confusing to the internet community.
It is hereby proposed that the name be soc.culture.dominican-rep
instead of the previous suggested soc.culture.dominican. The
respondents suggesting this change include group-advice,
and the members of the lists sd_temporal and Kiskeya. Additional
support to this change is found in news.groups in the follow-up
thread of the original RFD.
