This is the initial Request For Discussion (RFD) about reorganizing
soc.culture.jewish into a number of separate newsgroups in order to
better address the diversity of subjects and the needs of the readers
currently served by the one newsgroup.
PROPOSED NEWSGROUPS:
===================
soc.culture.israel Internal Israeli subjects (other than politics)
soc.culture.jewish.american Internal issues for American Jews
soc.religion.jewish Religious issues for all Jews
talk.politics.israel Internal Israeli politics (general)
talk.politics.israel.intifada Internal Israeli politics (Jewish/Arab)
PRELIMINARY CHARTERS:
====================
soc.culture.israel: To discuss and share information about
things Israeli taking place in Israel
and abroad. Music, art, theatre, dance,
cooking, movies, sports, literature, and
job information are all examples of
subjects for this newsgroup.
soc.culture.jewish.american: To discuss and share information about
Judaism and the Jewish experience in the
United States of America. Xmas, Easter, AIDS,
drug-use, where to live, and where to find
kosher food are all examples of subjects
for this newsgroup.
soc.religion.jewish: To discuss and share information about the
Jewish religion. Orthodox, Conservative,
Reform (as well as anywhere to the right,
left, or in-between of these reference
points).
talk.politics.israel: To discuss and share information about
general internal Israeli politics. Direct
elections for the Prime Minister/K'nesset
representatives, old/new/blue laws, etc.
are all examples of subjects for this
newsgroup.
talk.politics.israel.intifada: To discuss and share information about
internal Israeli politics with regard to
Jewish/Arab relations.
PROPOSED STATUS: all newsgroups unmoderated
===============
RATIONALES:
==========
soc.religion.jewish
Judaism is a religion. Regardless of the
differences between Orthodox, Conservative,
Reform, and other paths, Judaism remains,
first and foremost, a religion. The Jewish
religion exists, and is the same, despite
and without regard to geographic borders
and ethnic differences. As such, there
exists a definite need for a newsgroup
which is devoted *entirely* and *solely*
to the Jewish religion.
soc.culture.israel
soc.culture.jewish.american
Conversely, although Judaism exists in both
Israel and America, it is a religion, and
not a culture, and does not address the
day-to-day experiences of those living in
either locale. As such, there also exists a
definite need for two separate newsgroups
which are devoted *entirely* and *solely*
to the cultural and daily experiential needs
of Israelis and Jewish-Americans.
talk.politics.israel
talk.politics.israel.intifada
Finally, the politics of the State of Israel
are (although a subset of them) distinctly
different from those of the greater Middle-
Eastern area, and the politics of the `intifada'
are, in turn, both a subset of and distinctly
different from the politics of Israel. As such,
there exists a definite need for two separate
newsgroups which are devoted *entirely* and
*solely* [one] to the specific internal
Israeli issues of the intifada, and [one] to
the more general internal issues of Israeli
politics.
There will be a second RFD (Request for Discussion) posted
2 weeks from today, incorporating suggestions from the initial
2-week period.
A CFV (Call for Votes) will be posted 30 days from now, on Rosh
Hodesh Adar I (4 February 1992).
Please direct all discussion to news.groups, and please direct
all flames to /dev/null.
