REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION
Group Name: soc.culture.south-africa
Status: unmoderated
Distribution: world wide
Summary: Discussion on the politics, culture, and
and other issues on South Africa
Proposed by: Mduduzi Keswa (keswa@math.psu.edu)
This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) on the creation
of an unmoderatedUSENET newsgroup, soc.culture.south-africa, for
discussing socio-economic, scientific and political issues that
relate to South Africa.
This RFD is being cross-posted to the following newsgroups:
news.announce.newgroups
news.groups
soc.culture.african
soc.culture.nigeria
bit.tech.africana.
One of the main purposes of this RFD is to call for suggestions
regarding the rationale and the charter (see below). The
discussions are to take place in news.groups for the next
22-30 days.
As specified in the creation of news group Guideline, an official
Call For Votes (CFV) will be posted, at which time vote counting
will be conducted by a neutral party.
RATIONALE
South Africa is located in the southern tip of the African continent
and boasts a diversity in its cultural make-up that is unique in all
of Africa. South Africa's history also sets it apart from the rest of
Africa, more so since the election of the first non-white president.
For the first timein its history, South Africa has a multi-racial
government. These changes have triggered debates, discussions and
concerns of all sorts, not only from South Africans, but from the
international community as well.
In the past, the discussions on South Africa have taken place in the
newsgroup soc.culture.africa. Indeed, the existence of this newsgroup
(soc.culture.africa) has provided South Africans and other Africans
with a forum for expressionof diverse opinions on issues pertaining
to the continent. However, discussions on South Africa have primarily
focused on politics to the omission of other relevant facets of South
African life. In addition, South Africans were forced to sort through
myriads of news items before finding issues pertaining specifically
to South Africa.
In light of the recent political developments in South Africa, there
has been a need for a shift in the focus of discussions among South
Africans. More discussions dealing with South Africa's rich history
and cultures, technological advancements, socio-economic concerns,
post-apartheid works, etc, are in dire need, and as such demand a
forum solely for that purpose. For these reasons, we have sought
to start the soc,culture.south-africa newsgroup and hope for the
support of all fellow South Africans and others who may be interested.
CHARTER
The newsgroup soc.culture.south-africa is primarily intended for
socio-cultural discussions on South Africa. However, the discussions
may include other issueswith direct bearing on South Africa, and the
southern African region. The audience will likely be Southern Africans
in different parts of the world and all other interested parties.
The topics to be discussed include, but are not limited to,
the following:
-South African music, culture, history
-S.African food
-Popular sports in South Africa
-Issues of post-apartheid development
-Education and training in South Africa
-South African society in general
-South African art
-Technological prospects in South Africa
-Employment and the state of the economy
Owing to South Africa's controversial past and the infancy of the
post-apartheid era, all participating members are urged to be
mutually respectful towards eachother and to remain cognizant
of the various backgrounds, diverse as they will be,
of all the participants.
Cheers,
Mduduzi and Chuma Keswa
