I think that with the connection of the Soviet Union to the Internet
which took place in recent months, it is time to create a new group
soc.culture.russian.
Proposal: For the creation of newgroup soc.culture.russian
Moderated: No
Purpose: To provide a forum to discuss Russian/Soviet culture

This is the first CALL FOR VOTES for the creation of soc.culture.soviet.
This newsgroup would serve as a forum for discussions of topics relating
to Russian or Soviet culture. Although many people think that there
is no such thing as Soviet culture, the name is more appropriate than
soc.culture.russian because it allows for discussions relating to cultures
other than Russian which are still part of the USSR. If there is enough
interest in a separate group (for example, soc.culture.baltic), then this
could be created and would not interfere with soc.culture.soviet.
I believe that the most important thing is to actually start the newsgroup.
The name itself is of secondary importance. Therefore, I urge you to
consider voting for soc.culture.soviet even if you happen to disagree with
the name. If we get too many NO votes just because of the name of the
group, it will never be created. Of course, if you believe that
soc.culture.soviet or soc.culture.russian should not be created at all,
then by all means, I urge you to vote NO.
Some of the general topics discussed may be:
- Soviet Everyday Culture
- Social and Economic Issues in the Soviet Union
- Soviet Political Issues
- Business Prospects and joint ventures with USSR
- Prospects for academic cooperation, joint funding proposals
- Russian History, as well as other cultures in USSR
- Arts, Literature, and Music of Russia/Soviet Union
- Mythology, Folklore
- Sports
- Russian and other official languages
- Anything else I am missing pertaining to the Soviet Union
* Articles will be posted in English, although some portions may
contain other languages for the benefit of those who are discussing
language-specific topics.
* The newsgroup would NOT be MODERATED.
The voting period will last until and including March 17th. To vote,
please send e-mail to:
shmulevi@tut.fi (Ilya Shmulevich)
Set the subject to either:
YES soc.culture.soviet
NO soc.culture.soviet
You may include anything (thoughts, suggestions, etc.) in the message
body, but the subject line is what determines your vote. Only votes sent
to the above address will be counted. If you vote more than once, I
will accept only the last vote.
I would like to thank everyone who has given me comments and useful
suggestions concerning this newsgroup.

I have had some problems with my machine and I lost some of the votes. I
estimate the loss to be about 10%. I have provided a list of people from
whom I still have votes. If you have voted but your name is NOT in the
following list, PLEASE be so kind as to send me your vote again.
I have sorted it in alphabetical order and tried to use the real name
rather than the address where possible.
