| REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION: TALK.POLITICS.LIBERTARIAN |
-----------------------------------------------------
RFD:
---
This is a request for discussion (RFD) of the creation of the USENET newsgroup
talk.politics.libertarian. It contains suggested group name, one-line
description, status, charter, background, naming rationale, and rules.
This article is crossposted to news.announce.newgroups, news.groups,
alt.politics.libertarian, talk.politics.guns, talk.politics.drugs,
and talk.politics.misc.
The discussion will take place in the 'NEWS.GROUPS' newsgroup. All follow-up
posts should be posted to that group. Initial suggestions for the group,
status and charter are given below. These suggestion are subject to change
and review as soon as further opinions are provided. Anyone interested in
this proposal is encouraged to participate in the discussion.
The discussion will continue for 30 days from the date of the posting of
this RFD. If there is agreement, a Call for Vote (CFV) will be announced
shortly thereafter.
GROUP NAME: ONE-LINE DESCRIPTION:
----------- ---------------------
talk.politics.libertarian Libertarian politics + political philosophy
STATUS:
-------
Unmoderated
PROPOSED CHARTER:
-----------------
The proposed newsgroup talk.politics.libertarian is intended for
discussion of the libertarian political philosophy, libertarian views
on certain political issues, as well as discussion of the US and
worldwide libertarian political movements.
BACKGROUND:
-----------
The newsgroup alt.politics.libertarian has been in existance for quite
a while now, and has not gone away. There also exists a long-lived
mailing list LIBERNET, as well as a student libertarian club mailing list
and a US Libertarian Party list. Several libertarian World Wide Web
sites and ftp sites are also available.
A discussion on alt.politics.libertarian has resulted in zero opinions
against and several opinions for creation of a talk.politics.libertarian
group. It is expcted that most alt.politics.libertarian readers
would switch their reading to talk.politics.libertarian.
NAMING RATIONALE
----------------
The talk.politics hierarchy has been well astablished, including
talk.politics.misc, talk.politics.guns, talk.politics.drugs,
talk.politics.animals, etc. Several of these groups discuss
combined political philosophies and movements, such as animal
rights, gun rights, and drug prohibition.
It is not felt that creation of a talk.politics.theory.*
hierarchy would be appropriate for a libertarian newsgroup, lest we
move talk.politics.guns, talk.politics.animals, and such to
talk.politics.theory.*.
A further argument against expanding talk.politics.theory for a
libertarian newsgroup is that libertarianism is an actual
political movement, not just theory, with over 120 Libertarian Party
members in office in the U.S., and an active libertarian movement
worldwide (evidenced by, among other things, the International Society
for Individual Liberty).
RULES:
------
Talk.politics.libertarian will be an unmoderated newsgroup, thus anyone will
be able to post to this newsgroup. Some crossposting from other
talk.politics.* groups will be expected and accepted, as the libertarian
political philosophy has much to say about guns, drugs, government
medical care, etc.
Insults, "flames" or unnecessary criticism of individuals is strongly
discouraged. Please read the netiquette rules in news.announce.newusers before
posting your first article to any newsgroup, and try to stick to them whenever
posting articles.
THIS RFD IS INITIATED BY:
