API Outage on Nov 18, 2019

We had an outage with our upstream provider’s account creation API yesterday and anyone who signed up for an account yesterday may not have had their account properly setup. If you are having issues accessing NNTP and you signed up on that date, please let us know. We are working currently to make sure all those accounts are properly configured.

We have had a lot of people asking, so here is the URL for our upcoming Black Friday specials. We will not be announcing the actual deals until Black Friday, but you can at least save the page. It is important to remember that we will price match any competitor’s prices on new accounts.

Also somewhat important. Last year, some users complained that our Black Friday page was slightly NSFW. We had a lot more people in favor of the design than against it, but we would like to warn those who are worried.

We may change the specials as the day goes along, depending on how things are going. We have some other plans we may offer… ;-)

We have already been getting some questions regarding price matching for this weekend. The answer is YES! We will be price matching our competitor’s specials for this weekend! Keep in mind that our price match system is a 100% manual process. I have no idea what other providers will be offering and whether or not it will be better than what we are going to offer, but if there is something better out there, we will match it…as long as you send it in while the offer is still live and verifiable on the competitor’s website. If you are concerned about it still being there by the time we get to your email, take a screenshot.

We will answer all the price match emails in the order we get them, so please be patient.

Also, we have had people ask if we price match services which sell accounts with lesser retention (say 1000 days or so). Yes we do. Doesn’t matter to us if they have 1000 days or 3000 days. As long as the service is GENERALLY the same. We are not going to be like some big box stores that make sure its the EXACT same thing in the exact same box. That is annoying.

Black Friday is coming!

We are looking for your input for Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals!

Normally we offer five really great timed deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday but each only runs for an hour each day. This year we are thinking about just running two specials all-day-long on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Anyone have any suggestions? Sept 13 Update: Here is the latest we have received from our credit card processor.

“The transactions were never captured, only authorized. Your cardholders may see the authorizations on their online banking portal. This isn’t ideal, so we are working to reverse the authorizations.

These timeout errors are a serious issue to us, we have been fine tuning our back-end servers to resolve these errors. We will provide an update and a post mortem later today.”

Sept 12: We have had several customers impacted by a gateway issue with our credit card processor. Apparently the card is being charged properly but the gateway is telling our system that the transaction failed. In our system it will show up as a ‘failed transaction’ even though the funds were taken by the gateway from the customer card. We have raised the issue to our gateway provider and they are working to resolve. If you have had an issue like this, please contact support. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Hurricane Irma – Potential Impact

Hurricane Irma is rapidly approaching the Florida coastline. Most of our staff live in Florida. We would like our customers to know that we will still be handling support tickets as quickly as possible, but that some tickets may go unanswered for longer than normal. Please bear with us as our employees/friends/family get to safe areas and hopefully avoid the hurricane.

We DO NOT anticipate and NNTP service interruptions related to the hurricane.

Unlimited Account Usage Thresholds?

We sometimes get customers who receive “over quota” messages even though they are subscribed to an unlimited account. When we setup unlimited accounts, our back end software requires us to create a specific quota for every account. There is no way for us to get around this limitation. We currently make this number a very large number of Terabytes so the vast majority of our unlimited users will never encounter this issue. Occasionally, some of our users do legitimately reach this threshold. If this happens to you, please contact support and we will gladly reset your quota.

Why does NewsDemon not just set this initial unlimited account quota to some impossibly large number?  Like a billion Terabytes?

1) Some users share accounts with friends via login sharing or sophisticated proxies.  This is against our Terms of Service.  Our unlimited accounts are sold for individual users though we do allow sharing on block accounts and metered accounts.

2) We have had competitors sign up for unlimited accounts at discount pricing.  These competitors then use their own proxies (or other methods) to either feed their own spools or feed dozens of their own paying customers from our servers.   This allows competitors to generate revenue for themselves while billing their customers’ usage to NewsDemon.  For example, we once had an unnamed competitor sign up for ten accounts on Black Friday at $5 each.  This competitor then connected each of these accounts to a proxy and served their own customers from those accounts, using enough transit to potentially cost this competitor over $2000 if they paid for it, but they only paid us $50.  We verified our suspicions and terminated the accounts.  This competitor then went out on social media and spread negative comments (and continues to do so) that NewsDemon unlimited accounts are not unlimited.

What is the initial threshold value?  We do not disclose this value because it would make it easier for anyone looking to abuse the system.  It rises frequently as customer demand increases.

We understand not all of our customers will like this policy.  The reality is, a few bad customers sometimes ruin things for everyone.  But in this particular case, the bad customers have only ruined things for a very few people.  Looking at the server stats as of today, there have only been four users who have reached this unlimited threshold this month.  All four of those users were legit users who just needed to be reset, which we did, and they continued their usage.
