REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION
======================
Group Name: misc.health.arthritis
Status: Unmoderated
Distribution: Worldwide
Summary: Discussion about arthritis and related issues
Proposed by: Taneli Huuskonen ([email protected])
This is the official Request For Discussion concerning the creation of a
new group called misc.health.arthritis. The group would be intended as
a more widespread forum for such discussions as currently take place in
the existing newsgroup alt.support.arthritis. If an agreement about
the new group is reached within a discussion period lasting 21-30 days,
this RFD will be followed with a Call For Votes. The CFV will be posted
to the same newsgroups as this RFD, namely:
alt.med.fibromyalgia
alt.support.arthritis
news.announce.newgroups
news.groups
sci.med.immunology
Any subsequent discussion is directed to news.groups.
Rationale
---------
The existing alt.support.arthritis has proved to be
a much-used discussion forum for both doctors and lay people, with a
remarkably good signal-to-noise ratio, and many people have expressed
their satisfaction with the group in their postings. I have myself
found both the factual information and the personal collaborating of
experiences very important. Channeling the same discussions to
misc.health.arthritis would make them accessible to a wider audience,
as many Usenet sites do not carry the alt hierarchy of newsgroups
at all.
There was some concern about some current readers of
alt.support.arthritis being unable to access the new group. This
problem seems to be cleared, at least for residents of Southern
Ontario. If a similar situation persists somewhere else, please
make it known, so that alternative solutions can be sought
together. For details, please refer to my recent postings on
alt.support.arthritis and followups to them by Linda Mayhew.
There is an existing misc.health hierarchy, which already has the
following groups: misc.health.diabetes, misc.health.aids, and
misc.health.alternative. The new group would fit in well.
Charter
-------
The proposed group would be intended for discussions about different
aspects of arthritis mainly from the patient's point of view. Medical
discussions are supposed to be informational only, not intended for a
substitute of consulting a properly trained medical practitioner.
Anyone with an interest in arthritis is free to post, including but not
limited to patients, their friends and family members, doctors, and
other medical professionals dealing with different forms of arthritis.
The following are examples of intended topics:
- symptoms and causes of different forms of arthritis
- treatments, both conventional and alternative
- arthritis-related practical problems and ways to overcome them
- social issues relevant to arthritis patients
- emotional support
- different resources available to people with arthritis
Scientific discussions that are likely to interest arthritis patients in
general are welcome on misc.health.arthritis, even if cross-posted to
sci.med.immunology.
Commercial advertisements may NOT be posted to the proposed group.
