                      Proposal for a new newsgroup

Proposed by: Alain Fontaine
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Group name: comp.dcom.cabling-sys
Status: unmoderated
Distribution: world-wide
Summary: a newsgroup for the discussion of cabling systems for
              communication

JUSTIFICATION:

There are several groups in existence where different (local or
non-local) network technologies are discussed. While it has been
true in the past that each network technology did use a specific
type of cabling, the current trend is to wire buildings with some
universal cabling system, and then to use newer variations of the
established networking technologies (like 10baseT for Ethernet) on
that universal cabling.

Cabling systems have thus reached a point where they are independent
of the network technologies. They have their own standards, including
a forthcoming ISO/IEC standard. They should have the same kind of status
in the news, as it should be possible to find a place to discuss the
issues pertaining to that new discipline, indepedently of any network
architecture.

CHARTER:

The proposed group will provide a forum for the discussion of issues
related to the selection, installation and test of cabling systems.
Example topics:
- cable specifications
- connector specifications
- structure of cabling sytems
- implementation details
- test apparatus and procedures for cabling

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Please post information for discussion to the news groups (news.groups).

This RFD is being issued in concordance with the guidelines set in the
"How to create a new usenet newsgroup" FAQ regularly posted to

CHARTER

This group provides a forum for the discussion of issues
related to the selection, installation, test and usage of cabling.

Example topics:

- cable specifications
- connector specifications
- structure of cabling sytems
- implementation details
- test apparatus and procedures for cabling
- usage of existing cabling for new applications
- ISO 11801

Justification:

There are several groups in existence where different (local or
non-local) network technologies are discussed. While it has been true
in the past that each network technology did use a specific type of
cabling, the current trend is to wire buildings with some universal
cabling system, and then to use newer variations of the established

a forthcoming ISO/IEC standard. They should have the same kind of
status in the news, as it should be possible to find a place to
discuss the issues pertaining to that new discipline, independently of
any network architecture.

Additionally, the existing cabling must still be maintained and used
in the best possible way. The same group would also be a place where
more general questions about all cabling issues could be debated.

There were 247 YES votes and 20 NO votes, for a total of 267 valid votes.
There were 2 invalid ballots.

For group passage, YES votes must be at least 2/3 of all valid (YES and NO)
votes. There also must be at least 100 more YES votes than NO votes.

There is a five day discussion period after these results are posted. If no
serious allegations of voting irregularities are raised, the moderator of
news.announce.newgroups will create the group shortly thereafter.
