From [email protected] Thu Sep 29 13:09:45 1994 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: [email protected] (Peter Jensen) Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,comp.lang.visual,comp.lang.basic.visual Subject: RFD: comp.lang.visual moderation Followup-To: news.groups Date: 29 Sep 1994 13:01:59 -0400 Organization: Netcom Lines: 52 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: uunet news.announce.newgroups:5689 news.groups:118200 comp.lang.visual:2835 comp.lang.basic.visual:23908 FIRST REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION MODERATION OF COMP.LANG.VISUAL comp.lang.visual is a newsgroup devoted to visual programming languages. Microsoft, Inc., has released two popular programming systems called Visual Basic and Visual C++. These products are not visual programming languages, by anyone's definition of the term. However, since their introduction, hundreds of Usenet readers have seen the newsgroup 'comp.lang.visual' and thought that the newsgroup was for support of those products. A special newsgroup was created for Visual Basic, comp.lang.basic.visual, and other groups should cover Visual C++. While these groups stemmed the tide of improper posts, new users consistently see the comp.lang.visual name and post their queries there. There have been many attempts to prevent this; regular postings, FAQs, and even informative follow-up letters are sent to the posters, but the flow continues to drown out normal discussion of truly visual programming languages. The issue of what to do next ended up in a straw poll between the choices of making the group moderated or renaming it to something else. The vote was close but moderation won taking 54% of the votes. Alternative names proposed haven't satisfied everyone. This is the first RFD for moderation of comp.lang.visual. Please reply to this post with your ideas, suggestions, comments, criticism. This RFD will be reposted two weeks from the date of its initial posting incorporating any good suggestions from the followup postings. This discussion shall take place within news.groups; all followups should be sent there. After two weeks from the second RFD, provided that the response is generally positive, the first of two CFV's (call for votes) will be posted. The voting shall be performed under the supervision of Ron Dippold and the Usenet Volunteer Votetakers. David McIntyre, maintainer of the FAQ for comp.lang.visual, has volunteered to be moderator. Persons who would like to be alternate moderators in his absence are strongly encouraged to respond to this first RFD and be added to the moderators list BEFORE the CFV comes out. Thank you in advance for your thoughtful comments.
