Lines: 58 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: uunet news.announce.newgroups:4037 news.groups:81607 comp.os.misc:3704 comp.misc:21858 comp.realtime:4630 This is a formal Request for Discussion for the creation of a Usenet newsgroup for the discussion of issues regarding the QNX realtime operating system (both the 16- and 32-bit version, emphasizing version 4.x). Proposal: --------- Name: comp.os.qnx QNX is a micro-kernel-based, real-time, POSIX-compliant OS that runs on PC hardware and features the ability to produced network-based and multiprocessor distributed real-time applications that exhibits nearly the full device-level performance of the CPU and periperals. It has a very-much UNIX-like look and feel, and it conforms to POSIX standard 1003.1, 1003.2, and 1003.4. The QNX architectures emphasizes distributed processing, fault tolerance, and high-throughput, very-low-overhead networking , QNX was created in 1982 as one of the first microkernel-based real-time operating systems to run on a PC platformm, In 1989, QNX was rewritten from the ground up to be fully POSIX compliant, and was released in 1991 as QNX Version 4.0. QNX Version 4.2 is a full 32-bit real-time OS with support for both 16- and 32-bit applications, Pentium-optimized development tools, OpenLook window managment, and TCP/IP and NFS support. QNX is largely found in embedded systems , medical instrumentation, OLTP, and process-control environments where a UNIX-like environment is needed but real-time performance and is paramount. QNX is also finding its way into telecom markets. QNX Software Systems (Kanata, ON) currently boasts an installed base of over 250,000 nodes. The intended purpose of this group is to generate discussion of QNX development issues, including hardware and peripheral support, third-party applications for QNX, POSIX compliance vis-a-vis QNX, and portability. To a lesser degree, a general discussion of real-time and fault-tolerance issues in the context of QNX would also be appropiate. Moderation Status: ------------------ This proposal is for an unmoderated newsgroup. Procedure: ---------- Discussion is to be held *only* in news.groups. In 30 days, I will either: - Issue a Call for Votes on the proposal; - Request Further discussion; - Withdraw the proposal. -- Pat Noziska Atlas Telecom, Inc. STANDARD VOTING INFO You should send MAIL (posts to a group are invalid) to [email protected] (just replying by MAIL to this posting should work, *if* your newsreader honors the "Reply-To" line in the article header; to be sure, double-check the mail's destination before sending). Votes sent to other addresses will not be counted. Your mail message should contain one and only one of the following statements: I vote YES on comp.os.qnx I vote NO on comp.os.qnx I vote ABSTAIN on comp.os.qnx You may add a comment, but anything other than a definite statement involving the group name and "yes", "no", "for", or "against" on a single line may be rejected by the automatic vote counting program. If you later change your mind you may send in another vote, which will automatically supersede all previous votes. "ABSTAIN" votes serve to cancel previous votes. Standard Guidelines for voting apply. For the group to be created, 100 more YES votes than NO votes must be cast, and 2/3 of all valid votes must be YES votes. "ABSTAIN" votes are not counted in either calculation; their only role is to cancel previous votes. Every vote will be acknowledged by EMail. The CFV will be repeated once; the 2d CFV will contain a "bounce-ack", i.e. a list of people whose ACK messages bounced when I sent them. At the end of the voting period, the results of the vote will be posted to the groups where the CFV was posted. This posting will include a complete list of all voters, specifying how each one voted. All ballots sent must be considered public. The votes will be kept in the UVV archives; if a serious impropriety in the vote is alleged, those vote files may be made public, at the discretion of the UVV. They will also be provided to the moderator of news.announce.newsgroups on request.
