To vote YES, send mail to [email protected] To vote NO, send mail to [email protected] The content and subject line of a message are irrelevant. Posted votes will be ignored. Votes sent in reply to this article will be ignored. Votes will be accepted until February 20 11:59 p.m. PST. Watch news.groups for results. My software will, if all goes well, generate an acknowledgment for each valid vote received; I will also periodically post lists of votes received so far. If *after two weeks* you have neither received an acknolwedgment nor seen your name on a vote list, send mail to [email protected] explaining the problem. Don't send me votes in any case. Here is the charter of comp.programming, as I expect to post to the group periodically after it is created: comp.programming is an unmoderated group for discussions of programming issues which are not limited to a specific machine, operating system, or language: in particular, algorithms of all types. ``Programming issues'' means _practical_ programming issues: it is considered very bad form here to discuss issues with which you do not have direct programming experience. Any issue which is limited to a specific machine, operating system, or language is completely inappropriate for this group. If you are programming under UNIX, use comp.unix.programmer. If you are programming a PC, use comp.os.msdos.programmer. If you are programming a Mac, use comp.sys.mac.programmer. If you are programming an Amiga, use comp.sys.amiga.programmer. If you are programming a game and think that your question is of interest to other game programmers, use rec.games.programmer. If you're absolutely sure that your question is on the use of the C language---it wouldn't make sense if you were using a different language---try comp.lang.c. If your question is a meta-question which has to do with features of various programming languages, use comp.lang.misc. If your question has to do with theoretical results which have to do with computer science rather than programming, try comp.theory. Finally, if you're sure that your question would make sense under a variety of operating systems, running on a variety of machines, and in a wide variety of programming languages, then comp.programming is probably right. It's often difficult to talk about programming without quoting the results of that programming---i.e., code. There is nothing wrong with using a particular language to present code samples, as long as they _could_ have been expressed in various other languages. However, you are less likely to have your question understood if you illustrate it with a choice segment of APL than if you use pseudo-code, Algol, C, etc. In the Request for Discussion in mid-December, I posted dozens of subject lines from articles which had appeared in other groups and would have been appropriate in comp.programming: for example, a posting from Chris Torek introducing hash tables. I explained why comp.programming was a better name than comp.programmer. There was no disagreement on this issue during the discussion period. I also stated that comp.software-eng had a different focus from the group that I wanted to create; none of the articles whose subject lines I listed would have fit into comp.software-eng. There was no disagreement on this issue either. I also stated the following: : Why not use comp.theory? comp.theory generally carries traffic on : theoretical computer science---e.g., the repeated discoveries of : o(n log n) sorting algorithms, P versus NP, the Holy Grail, etc. :-) : comp.programming is for practical programming problems. Certainly : there's some overlap between theory and practice, but not enough to : eliminate the need for comp.programming. Imagine a discussion in : comp.theory on debugging... I would again like to emphasize that the difference between comp.theory and comp.programming is exactly the difference between theory and practice. comp.practice would be a confusing group name, though. :-) I received 23 e-mail replies to the RFD. All but one were supportive. One opined that comp.programming will become a rather trashy group. Five suggested comp.algorithms, though two of those said that comp.algorithms wouldn't be able to carry some of the material that comp.programming can carry. Meanwhile, Thomas Koenig (and later Mark Brader) suggested in news.groups that the group could be split: comp.programming.algorithms, for example. I consider this to be an excellent suggestion. As soon as the group carries enough traffic to deserve a split, we should figure out what subgroups are needed. There were thirty-odd other followups. Several people suggested comp.algorithms, including three who said they'd vote against comp.programming. Everyone else supported comp.programming. Several people pointed out reasons that comp.algorithms would be a poor group name. Most importantly, it would exclude a wide variety of programming topics which currently don't have a home: useful debugging tricks, floating-point representations, communications protocols, outside-in programming, the art of designing library interfaces, etc. It would also intersect comp.theory, but I want a group dedicated to _practical_ issues. (comp.programming.algorithms, if we create it later, will deal with _practical_ algorithm issues.) Anyway, there wasn't overwhelming support for comp.algorithms, and there were several people against the name change. So the argument for safety wins: if we create comp.programming then it's easy to create an algorithms subgroup later, but if we create comp.algorithms then the remainder of comp.programming will be screwed permanently. Hence the group name remains as comp.programming. Let's do it! ---Dan From [email protected] Fri Nov 6 10:21:03 1992 Xref: rpi news.announce.newgroups:1786 news.groups:38381 comp.unix.programmer:4575 rec.games.programmer:5373 comp.os.msdos.programmer:12621 comp.sys.mac.programmer:31744 comp.sys.amiga.programmer:12642 comp.lang.misc:7517 comp.lang.c:33972 Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,comp.unix.programmer,rec.games.programmer,comp.os.msdos.programmer,comp.sys.mac.programmer,comp.sys.amiga.programmer,comp.lang.misc,comp.lang.c Path: rpi!bounce-back From: [email protected] (Dan Bernstein) Subject: 2nd CFV and VOTE ACK: comp.programming Followup-To: poster Sender: [email protected] Nntp-Posting-Host: cs.rpi.edu Date: Mon, 3 Feb 1992 14:48:53 GMT Approved: [email protected] Lines: 422 This is the second call for votes for comp.programming, an unmoderated group for discussions of programming issues which are not limited to a specific machine, operating system, or language. To eliminate any possibility of error, I've simply included here the list generated by my software. It indicates addresses (relative to ocf.berkeley.edu) and dates received. However, I see one vote from an invalid address, and three duplicate votes. They will be eliminated from the final tally. I also received a few votes in my mailbox; they have been trashed. ---Dan [email protected] (Tom Hruczkowski (Bio Eng)) Wed Jan 22 11:25:17 [email protected] (Mean Green Dancing Machine) Wed Jan 22 20:40:37 [email protected] (Tim Dierks, ToyMeister, Cray abuser) Sat Jan 25 05:16:02 [email protected] (Adrian Howard) Wed Jan 22 20:41:03 [email protected] ("A." There were 403 valid yes votes and 47 valid no votes. So comp.programming passes by a wide margin. There were also five duplicate yes votes and one yes vote with an invalid address, probably caused by mailer errors. Votes mailed to me were, as was stated in the CFV, ignored; there were two such votes. There will be a five-day waiting period to revise the tally in case of lost votes. Please post any comments on the vote, including lost votes, to news.groups; do not mail them to me. Barring a Vogon invasion or some other unlikely event, David Lawrence will send out a newgroup message for comp.programming at the end of the waiting period. Below is the vote list. The date next to an address is the date when my software received the vote. Note that addresses are relative to ocf.berkeley.edu. ---Dan NO: [email protected] Sat Jan 25 18:42:16 [email protected] (Guess who?)
