Lines: 47 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: uunet news.announce.newgroups:4705 news.groups:97573 comp.dsp:9791 comp.lsi.cad:4236 This is a request for discussion to consider the creation of a group for the Ptolemy design environment from UC Berkeley, to be named comp.soft-sys.ptolemy This seems the most appropriate name, by analogy with the groups for Khoros and Matlab. The group would be unmoderated. What is Ptolemy: Ptolemy provides a highly flexible foundation for the specification, simulation, and rapid prototyping of systems. It is an object oriented framework within which diverse models of computation can co-exist and interact. For example, using Ptolemy a data-flow system can be easily connected to a hardware simulator which in turn may be connected to a discrete-event system, etc. Because of this, Ptolemy can be used to model entire systems. In addition, Ptolemy has code generation capabilities. From a flow graph description, Ptolemy can generate both C code and DSP assembly code for rapid prototyping. (Code generation facilities are presently limited). Ptolemy has been used for a broad range of applications including signal processing, telecomunications, parallel processing, wireless communications, network design, radio astronomy, real time systems, and hardware/software co-design. Ptolemy has also been used as a lab for signal processing and communications courses. Currently Ptolemy has hundreds of users in over 100 sites, both in industry and academia. A new release of Ptolemy (version 0.5, which if it were numbered like most software would be 5.0, since it is the 5th major release) is planned for next week (knock on wood). It is freely redistributable under the Berkeley licensing terms (same as for Tcl/Tk). It currently runs on Sun Sparcs (SunOS 4.1.x), DecStations (Ultrix), and HP-PA (HP-UX). There is presently a mailing list, [email protected], for Ptolemy discussion, with more than 200 participants. It's starting to get a bit large for a mailing list, and it seems time to make a newsgroup. Any discussion that is relevant to Ptolemy would be fair game for the newsgroup. -- -- Joe Buck	[email protected] Posting from but not speaking for Synopsys, Inc.
