Comp.testing will be a spin-off from comp.software-eng to harbor discussions of testing tools and techniques for both hardware and software systems. PURPOSE: Currently, discussions of tools and techniques for software testing take place in comp.software-eng. While testing is inarguably a vital part of software engineering, a new group specifically designated for discussions of testing issues may be justified for two reasons: 1) comp.software-eng gets a relatively great deal of traffic. It may not be a bad idea to re-direct some of this traffic. 2) Usenet does not currently have a newsgroup which seems appropriate for discussions of hardware and system testing. A new newsgroup whose charter specifically includes these issues could fill this gap. CONTENTS: For the purpose of this discussion, we will assume that a system is comprised of hardware, software, people, and procedures. Comp.testing should be chartered to include discussions characterized by the following list of subjects, compiled from preliminary discussions: - system test automation - system test planning - system test optimization (e.g. minimize regression testing) - test tools - test metrics - measurement technology - nature of testing under various development models (e.g. object-oriented, real time, etc...) - testing in a rapid prototyping environment (i.e. sans spec) - relationship of various classes/types of tests to requirements, ... - conference and symposium announcements - the definition of "software testing" and its relationship to SQA and debugging. - requirements traceability - risk-based testing - the most useful form of specifications and functional requirements from the tester's point of view. - testing techniques, e.g., structured testing using control flowgraphs and basis path testing, equivalence class partitioning, boundary value analysis, cause-effect graphing, path predicate testing, data flow testing, program slices, data object state and usage analysis, data flow anomaly analysis, and sensitivity analysis. - test coverage criteria, e.g., statement (C1), path, branch (C2), module (S0), and call-pair (S1) coverage criteria. All levels of testing for both hardware and software should be considered appropriate subject matter. While it is likely that the group will take on a software flavor early on, we should try to generate interest and input from people with hardware and system testing experience. It is especially important that we foster discussion of *system* level testing issues, since this is the weakest area of our collective knowledge. If the Usenet community decides that the new group should be moderated, then I volunteer to serve in that capacity. (Warning: Campaign starts here:) I work in the spacecraft integration and test organization at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Engineers in my section, and within other JPL organizations, have a great deal of experience in system level integration and test which I would seek to relate in the proposed newsgroup. In addition, NASA's new commitment to technology transfer with Industry and Acadamia helps ensure that personnel at JPL and other NASA centers will be anxious to do their part in making this newsgroup a valuable resource for the entire Usenet community. RATIONALE: The system development community is very diverse in the kinds of systems we build. From scientific software to industrial machinery, all systems require testing. The number of systems that fall into the hybrid category - hardware/software/people/procedures - is increasing, but it is not clear that the focus of testing research is following that shift. Little knowledge of system level testing approaches, methods, and tools has been codified and made readily available to the testing community. The proposed newsgroup, comp.testing, could help fill that gap by providing a channel for testing researchers and professionals to exchange experiences at all levels, from code fragment or circuit diagram to automobile or spacecraft. ISSUES: The following issues should be resolved during the discussion: - Name: for starters, how about: comp.testing comp.system-testing comp.qa (quality asurance) comp.vv (verification and validation) - Charter: What has been left out? What should be restated? Excluded? - Moderation: should the group be moderated? If so, by whom? - Attitude toward vendor publicity: solicited only? strictly forbidden? DISCUSSION PERIOD AND VOTE: The discussion period will be to 17 April 93. Please post all discussion in "news.groups", cross-posting as appropriate. If a consensus is reached by the end of the discussion period, a Call for Votes (CFV) will be posted at that time. The voting period, in accordance with Usenet guidelines, will last for 30 days. -- Chuck Ames Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology [email protected] From [email protected] Wed Apr 28 18:54:45 1993 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: Chuck Ames <[email protected]> Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,comp.software-eng Subject: CFV: comp.software.testing Followup-To: poster Date: 27 Apr 1993 16:22:19 -0400 Organization: Jet Propulsion Laboratory Lines: 105 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: uunet news.announce.newgroups:3514 news.groups:70949 comp.software-eng:14303 First Call for Votes: comp.software.testing ABSTRACT Here we go: Voting period is April 27 through May 27.
