What follows is a formal Request For Discussion. Name of proposed new group -------------------------- comp.binaries.newton Status ------ moderated Proposed moderator ------------------ [email protected] (Roy Smith) History ------- A small group of folks from comp.sys.newton.misc have been pre-discussing this for a short time by email. The intent wasn't to shut anybody out of the process, it just seemed easier to manage. This RFD is largely similar to, but somewhat different from, an earlier draft circulated via email to that group. Charter ------- Comp.binaries.newton is to be used for posting Newton software, both runnable applications and source code. Free software, shareware, and demoware are all suitable (by demoware, I mean demo versions of commercial applications which are artificially limited in functionality in some way). Software might include applications, Newton Books, databases, or other Newton-related non-textual material which, in the opinion of the moderator, is of general interest to the Newton community. This will not include product announcements or items of a strictly promotional nature, but it might include upgrades, patches, and the like. The moderator will also maintain ftp and gopher archives of all c.b.n postings. The moderator will not pass judgement on the quality or usefulness of the software. By submitting an item for posting on comp.binaries.newton, the submitter agrees to allow the item to be freely redistributed, including being placed in an archive with unrestricted access, and which may very well be mirrored on other archives beyond the control of the moderator. Final details of the posting format have not yet been worked out, but a clear and essential aim is to have a format which is equally useful to both Mac/Newton and Windows/Newton users. The current suggestion is to use binhexed Package files for applications (there seems to be fairly good agreement on this) and binhexed StuffIt 1.5.1 archives for source projects (there is less firm agreement on this, pending figuring out just how useful a format this will be for Windows-based Newton Toolkit developers). There are supposedly existing tools for handling binhex and StuffIt formats on a Windows platform. If future developments make it apparent that a change in posting format will enable the postings to be useful to a wider audience, or more useful to the same audience, the moderator may change the format. Additional Information ---------------------- The Newton, at least in its current stage of development, requires the use of either a Macintosh or a Windows PC to develop and/or download software, and the comp.binaires.newton audience will span both communities. The proposed moderator lacks Windows experience, and is grateful that Matthew S Krawitz, [email protected], has volunteered his assistance, in this area. The Hippocrates Project of NYU Medical Center (the proposed moderator's employer) has a serious professional interest in Newton and is committed to the effort and hardware resources necessary to ensure a well run and stable newsgroup and archive. I.e. this isn't just a project being done on the side, while the boss isn't watching. :-) Discussion ---------- Discussion ofthis proposed group will take place on news.groups starting at the time of this posting and lasting until about January 15, 1994. Vote ---- Assuming a productive result of the discussion period, a Call For Votes will be conducted by neutral third parties in January. No votes will be accepted prior to the official CFV. Ron Dippold ([email protected]> will be in charge of running the vote. HOW TO VOTE ----------- You should send E-MAIL (posts to a group are invalid) to: [email protected] Just replying by E-MAIL to this message should work, assuming you are reading this using standard newsreader software. Your mail message should contain one and only one of the following statements: I vote YES on comp.binaries.newton I vote NO on comp.binaries.newton I ABSTAIN on comp.binaries.newton I CANCEL my vote on comp.binaries.newton You may add a comment, or use other wording, but only a definite, unconditional, unambiguous statement for or against the creation of comp.binaries.newton will count as a vote. Neither ABSTAIN nor CANCEL messages are counted as votes; they serve only to cancel any previous vote. Abstentions are noted in the final vote list, whereas CANCEL removes your vote from that list entirely. (This is the only difference between the two.) If you later change your mind you may vote again; only your last valid vote will count. All votes will be acknowledged by E-mail. If you don't receive an acknowledgment within a few days of your vote, vote again. It is your responsibility to make sure your vote is registered correctly. Standard Guidelines for voting apply: no more than one vote per person, no more than one vote per account. If you attempt multiple votes or other vote fraud, all your votes may be canceled and your name published. RESULT ------ The complete vote list will be posted with the vote result, including how each person voted. Note that Usenet votes are not done by secret ballot. There will then be a five-day period during which the published vote list may be corrected and any irregularities addressed. The requirements for group creation are 100 more YES votes than NO votes, and 2/3 of all counted votes being YES. -- Mark James <[email protected]> Dialogic Corporation, 300 Littleton Road | "Wherever people feel free to Parsippany NJ 07054, U.S.A. | smoke, I feel free to fart." +1 201 334 1268 ext 438 Fax +1 201 334 1257| -- J-M DuFerre, chef, 1891 From [email protected] Fri Feb 4 16:18:06 1994 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: [email protected] (Mark James) Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,comp.sys.newton.misc,comp.sys.newton.programmer Subject: 2nd CFV: comp.binaries.newton moderated Supersedes: <[email protected]> Followup-To: poster Date: 4 Feb 1994 16:02:53 -0500 Organization: Usenet Volunteer Votetakers Lines: 113 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Expires: 13 Feb 1994 00:00:00 GMT Message-ID: <[email protected]> References: <[email protected]> NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: uunet news.announce.newgroups:4572 news.groups:94274 comp.sys.newton.misc:5356 comp.sys.newton.programmer:2094 2nd CALL FOR VOTES (of 2) Moderated group comp.binaries.newton Newsgroups line: comp.binaries.newton	Binaries, sources, books, etc. (Moderated) Votes must be received by 23:59:59 UTC, 12 Feb 1994.
