From [email protected] Mon Sep 27 10:23:46 1993 Flags: 000000000201 Path: lear From: David Wright <[email protected]> Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,comp.misc,comp.sys.misc Subject: CALL FOR VOTES: comp.sys.unisys Date: Sun, 6 Jan 91 23:54:06 PST Reply-To: [email protected] Followup-to: news.groups Organization: STC Technology Limited, London Road, Harlow, Essex, UK Keywords: posted Charter: Comp.sys.unisys is intended for discussion of systems sold under the "Unisys" name, including former Sperry, Burroughs, and Convergent Technologies machines. Unisys software such as Mapper is also welcome. Most of the discussion of relabelled third-party UNIX equipment such as the Convergent Technologies 386 PC-clone based boxes or the Arix and Sequent minis would be expected to go on in comp.unix or comp.sys.sequent. The newsgroup will be unmoderated. Voting Period The voting period starts when this is posted and lasts for 28 days. Votes received after 24:00 GMT on Sunday 3rd February will not be counted. How to vote Vote by sending mail to [email protected], with the word YES or NO (case immaterial) in the subject line. If you use rn or a similar news reader, you can use r (reply), add YES or NO to the Subject line, and mail. Then your vote would appear as one of the following: Subject: Re: CALL FOR VOTES: comp.sys.unisys YES Subject: Re: CALL FOR VOTES: comp.sys.unisys NO Votes which do not contain yes or no in the Subject line, or which are sent to me instead of 'votes', will cause me extra work but will still be counted if unambiguous. Ambiguous votes and any posted votes will not be counted. If your mailer will not accept mail to the above address try votes%[email protected] or ...uunet!mcsun!stl!votes You could even send me X.400 mail at the address given in my signature. Votes will be acknowledged by mail, but any acknowledgement that bounces will not be re-tried. However I will also acknowledge by a mass posting to news.groups. The final vote tally will be posted at the end of the vote, including a list showing how everyone voted. Credit where it's due department Peter da Silva supplied the group charter shown above. This particular discussion on having a Unisys group was started by Craig Wilson. Vote Taker's credentials I have no personal interest in whether there is a Unisys group or not - I don't work for, sell or even use any Unisys systems. I volunteered to take the vote because Craig didn't want to, and I had objected to alt.unisys on the grounds that it should really go for voting as comp.sys.unisys rather than become an alt group just because nobody could be bothered to carry out a vote. Anyway I haven't done one recently :-) Summary of discussion The Call for Discussion was posted to news.announce.newgroups a month ago. At the time I said I'd call the vote in two weeks time unless someone had a good reason to delay it: I promptly got such a reply citing "Christmas". As to actual discussion, there has been very little, almost all in favour. The only question is whether enough people actually want the group: the vote will settle that. Regards, David Wright STL, London Road, Harlow, Essex CM17 9NA, UK [email protected] ...uunet!mcsun!ukc!stl!dww PSI%234237100122::DWW /g=David/s=Wright/org=STC Technology Ltd/prmd=STC plc/admd=Gold 400/co=GB From [email protected] Mon Sep 27 10:49:15 1993 Xref: rpi news.announce.newgroups:891 comp.misc:7582 comp.sys.misc:1369 alt.config:3147 Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,comp.misc,comp.sys.misc,alt.config Path: rpi!tale From: David Wright <[email protected]> Subject: VOTE RESULT: comp.sys.unisys fails 103:9 Followup-To: news.groups,alt.config Sender: [email protected] Nntp-Posting-Host: cs.rpi.edu Organization: STC Technology Limited, London Road, Harlow, Essex, UK Date: 21 Feb 91 02:54:20 GMT Approved: [email protected] Lines: 266 The results are now in for comp.sys.unisys: 103 YES 9 NO There were also two entries which didn't state how they wanted to vote, and four late votes (3 YES, 1 NO); these have not been included in the result. Subject to ratification, the vote therefore FAILS by 6 votes, as there must be a majority of 100 for the group to be created. The majority must also be >66%, but that was not a problem here (92%). Unless there have been a significant number of votes lost, or other irregularities, and these are reported within the next 5 days, the group will not be created. A full list of all accepted votes is appended, followed by an analysis of voting by site. The "site vote" was 73 : 9, and no site voted both ways. Comment ------- The vote suffered by lack of 'mid-term' publicity in news.announce.newgroups because the moderator was away - the 2nd CFV only went to news.groups, comp.misc and comp.sys.misc. How significant this was cannot be known - probably it would have made a few votes difference. 6? There was certainly a boost to the voting rate after the second posting. On the other hand, I did run the vote for 4 weeks (many now run for 3, the minimum allowed), and of course the original CFV was in n.a.n. So everyone who really cared should have known about it. None of the NO voters gave any comment on their reasons. A few YES voters did, typically that they were users and would benefit from talking to each other. I also received a comment from a Unisys person saying that the group would be good both for them and for their users. A pity it won't happen. N.B. the comment about the moderator being away isn't a complaint about Eliot, who did a good job for us all and didn't get many thanks for it - moderators need a break just like anyone else. But maybe Dave could appoint a couple of stand-by's ready for when *he* needs a break? So what now? ------------ So what now? Go back to the mailing list? Post to comp.sys.misc? Create alt.sys.unisys after all? I must say that if we do this, all the vote will have done is delayed that group by 2-3 months. I must say it because if I don't, someone else will :-) If there is now steady Unisys trafic in comp.sys.misc or alt.sys.unisys, and it keeps up for at least 6 months, then another vote held then might succeed (votes cannot be repeated in less than 6 months). Finally - I think it is reflection on the state of the net that a technical, computer based group like this fails, while all sorts of social, recreational and political groups can be created with large majorities. Usenet has ceased to be primarily a technical forum for better understanding of computer systems, and is now a much more general talking shop. Whether this is a good or bad thing is not an issue I'll debate here.
