UnixWare (Novell) ( comp.unix.unixware )
From [email protected] Wed Sep 8 19:40:47 1993 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: [email protected] (Evan Leibovitch) Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,biz.univel.misc,comp.sys.novell,comp.unix.sys5.r4,comp.unix.pc-clone.32bit Subject: RFD: comp.unix.unixware Followup-To: news.groups Date: 8 Sep 1993 16:23:05 -0400 Organization: Somewhere just far enough out of Toronto Lines: 61 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: uunet news.announce.newgroups:4013 news.groups:81085 biz.univel.misc:221 comp.sys.novell:26665 comp.unix.sys5.r4:5091 comp.unix.pc-clone.32bit:4817 This is a formal Request for Discussion for the creation of a Usenet newsgroup for the discussion of issues regarding Unix products of the Novell division known as UnixWare. Proposed Name: -------------- comp.unix.unixware This is a natural placement for a specific company's variant of Unix, and has significant precedent in Usenet (comp.unix.solaris, comp.unix.aix, comp.unix.ultrix, etc.) Similar to these other groups, the UnixWare group's purpose is not to discuss generic Unix issues, rather those are specific to the product line now known as UnixWare. UnixWare is Novell's implementation for Unix System 5 Release 4.2, also known until now as Univel. While it is heavily based on R4.2, UnixWare contains significant enhancements and bundled products not necessarily shared by other licencees of generic System 5. Moderation Status: ------------------ This proposal is for an unmoderated newsgroup. It is anticipated that there would be a two-way news-to-mail gateway at telly.on.ca, maintained for those who do not have Usenet newsreading access. History: -------- The Univel mailing list was created in late winter of 1993. A newsgroup in the 'biz' hierachy (biz.univel.misc) was established August 2nd, with two-way gateway to the list. The mailing list now contains more than 250 names, peaking at more than 350 before the 'biz' group was started. The group is active and growing in numbers. Recently Novell announced its intention to drop the name Univel, and I polled the users of the newsgroup what name it would prefer instead. A large majority of the respondants (more than 70%) specified the newsgroup comp.unix.unixware as their preference, while another 18% expressed a desire to have the new newsgroup somewhere within the comp hierarchy. Procedure: ---------- Discussion is to be held *only* in news.groups. After at least three weeks, I will determine the next course of action which will be either: - Issuance of a Call for Votes on the proposal; - Further discussion; - Withdrawal of the proposal. Thank you. -- Evan Leibovitch, Sound Software Ltd., located in beautiful Brampton, Ontario [email protected] / uunet!utzoo!telly!evan / (416) 452-0504 If there's someone you can live without .... then do so - The Barenaked Ladies From [email protected] Thu Oct 14 20:50:16 1993 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: [email protected] (Dave Cornejo) Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,biz.univel.misc,comp.sys.novell,comp.unix.sys5.r4,comp.unix.pc-clone.32bit,comp.windows.x.i386unix Subject: CFV: comp.unix.unixware Followup-To: poster Date: 14 Oct 1993 19:01:13 -0400 Organization: Usenet Volunteer Votetakers Lines: 76 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Expires: 5 Nov 1993 00:00:00 GMT Message-ID: <[email protected]> References: <[email protected]> Reply-To: [email protected] NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: uunet news.announce.newgroups:4158 news.groups:84551 biz.univel.misc:507 comp.sys.novell:28965 comp.unix.sys5.r4:5727 comp.unix.pc-clone.32bit:5156 comp.windows.x.i386unix:4400 FIRST CALL FOR VOTES Unmoderated group comp.unix.unixware Newsgroups line: comp.unix.unixware Discussion about Novell's UnixWare products Votes must be received by 4 Nov 1993, 23:59:59 UTC. (Moderated) Votes must be received by 29:59:59 UTC, 12 April 1995. This vote is being conducted by a neutral third party. For voting questions only contact Steve Bonine <[email protected]>. For questions about the proposed group contact Evan Leibovitch <[email protected]>. BACKGROUND: Traffic in the existing comp.unix.unixware newsgroup has grown to the point where splitting it into multiple groups has been proposed and endorsed by those readers of the group who participated in a straw poll. Consensus followed that the first 'split' allow a new group to be created in which 'announcements' from users or vendors could be posted, free of side-discussions, in the manner of numerous "announce" newsgroups already existing in the comp.* namespace. CHARTERS and RATIONALES CHARTER FOR comp.unix.unixware.announce: This group is intended To provide a low-noise forum for official announcements from Novell, users and third-parties supporting UnixWare products. Product announcements, listings of events and functions, official statements, availability of archives sites storing UnixWare binaries or documentation, price lists, press releases and position papers are all welcome. Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) files, including but not limited to the extensive UnixWare FAQ maintained by Jim Vlcek, are also welcome. Creation of this group would make the existing UnixWare mailing list gateway easier to manage; it would make useful announcements easier to archive and/or allow different Usenet expiry times vis. the existing group. RATIONALE FOR MODERATION OF comp.unix.unixware.announce: It is intended that this group will be restricted to one-time-only announcements, without discussion. The moderation would merely enforce this simple policy, without being judgemental regarding content or source. All articles posted to this group would include a header re-directing followup discussions of any kind to comp.unix.unixware.misc. Articles will be encouraged to contain an "Archive-Name" header for the benefit of sites with automatic archiving software. The proposed moderator is myself; Evan Leibovitch, creator of the original Univel mailing list and later the newsgroups biz.univel.misc and comp.unix.unixware. Why? Nobody else has come forward during initial discussions. I believe as a UnixWare VAR I ride a reasonable middle ground between Novell and end users, as to be not overly siding with one side or another. Indeed, it seems from this viewpoint that most of the traffic in the newsgroups so far has not been adversarial. I do not consider the moderation of this group to be at all controversial. CHARTER OF comp.unix.unixware.misc: This will be almost identical to the original charter of the group comp.unix.unixware, which itself is derived from biz.univel.misc. This is a general-purpose forum for discussion about products of Novell's Unix Systems Group, primarily its implementation of Unix for PC-architecture systems sold under the name UnixWare. Product announcements and advertisements are now discouraged; postings of this kind should use the new group comp.unix.unixware.announce. RATIONALE FOR RENAMING comp.unix.unixware TO comp.unix.unixware.misc: While the original idea was simply to create a moderated .announce group, David Lawrence has suggested that it is preferable to rename the current group at the same time, thus maintaining a consistent namespace. This will make it easier to create further groups under a comp.unix.unixware.* hierarchy in the future should the need arise. It will also reduce cross-posting and simplify news-system administration. As comp.unix.unixware was gatewayed to the 'univel' mailing list, the comp.unix.unixware.misc will be, also once renamed.
