This includes, but is not limited to: o	questions about particular implementations including the sample implementation (PEX-SI). o	questions about writing PEX applications o	questions about different API (application programmer interfaces) that generate the PEX protocol Just as public releases of the X window system generate a large number of questions about its use (from either a programmer or user perspective), questions regarding PEX are beginning to grow in number with the first public release of the PEX-SI in the R5 release of the X Window System. Given the amount of new functionality introduced by the PEX extension to the core protocol, one can expect many questions to arise once people start to play with the SI. The traffic on comp.windows.x is already quite high and the name doesn't necessarily imply that one should discuss PEX issues there. Questions that could be answered by the FAQ in comp.windows.x are beginning to regularly appear on comp.graphics. The name of the proposed new group is up for grabs, but I have a few suggestions: comp.graphics.pex + Applicable because PEX is a graphics protocol. - ? comp.graphics.phigs + Appropriate because the API distributed with the PEX-SI is a PHIGS API. - Inappropriate because the API generating the PEX protocol need not be a PHIGS-ish API (although the semantics of the protocol are still rooted in the PHIGS/PHIGS-PLUS standards). comp.windows.pex + Appropriate because PEX doesn't stand by itself, but is an extension of the core X window system protocol. - Inappropriate because it may lead to the confusion of PEX with the window system upon which it is based, i.e. the X window system (PEX is not a window system). comp.windows.x.pex + Indicates that PEX is defined within the realm of the X window sysetm. + Avoids being tied exclusively to PHIGS-ish APIs. +/- Sets a precedent for dividing comp.windows.x into a hierarchy which may or may not be a 'good thing' depending on your viewpoint. (Should comp.windows.x.intrinsics be created, for instance?) All discussion, comments and suggestions welcome in news.groups. -- Rich -- ``Read my MIPS -- no new VAXes!!'' -- George Bush after sniffing freon Disclaimer: I speak for myself, except as noted.
