From [email protected] Sat Apr 4 02:23:37 1992 Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,can.vlsi,comp.lsi,comp.lsi.cad,comp.lsi.testing,comp.lang.verilog,comp.lang.vhdl From: [email protected] (Peter Stokes) Subject: RFD: comp.sys.cadence Followup-To: news.groups Organization: Canadian Microelectronics Corporation Date: Mon, 30 Mar 1992 18:10:49 GMT Call For Discussion: Creation of comp.sys.cadence - an effective forum for discussion of problems, solutions, pains and gains related to Cadence tools is desirable. - some interest has been expressed on comp.lsi.cad - Cadence just merged with Valid, placing them as a very significant player in the CAD s/w marketplace. - there rates to be lots of discussion about migrating to Opus/Amadeus in the future - mentor users have their own newsgroup :-) The company I work for (Canadian Microelectronics Corp.) maintains the mailing list: [email protected] with international membership (approximately 200 subscribers). There also exists: [email protected] maintained by Jeff Putsch ([email protected]) at Unitrode Integrated Circuits Corp. On the creation of comp.sys.cadence, I propose [email protected] be retired. Jeff and I agree that discussion is useful but wonder why traffic is close to nil on our respective mailing lists. The future of artist-users is up to Jeff and the members of the list. The company I work for has volunteered to archive comp.sys.cadence if it is created and make archives available via anonymous ftp and sometime in the future, via a mail archive server. We currently do this for can.vlsi, a Canadian VLSI newsgroup on Usenet. I would personally be willing to post questions from users who have email access but no Usenet access. This would take place on a "best-effort-basis" and be subject to the mail volume and my workload. I'm sending a copy of this CFD Usenet posting to both of the above-mentioned mailing lists. If you received this via one of these mailing lists and wish to comment, you may email me directly. And so this is a Call For Discussion for the creation of: Name: comp.sys.cadence Charter: Discussion on CAE tools by Cadence Design Systems, including: requests for assistance, solutions to problems, new tools, old tools, company mergers and purchases, migration to new frameworks (e.g. FMKII), gripes and wishes. Exclusion: Discussion on the Verilog language as this is taking place on comp.lang.verilog. Moderation: Unmoderated. Side effects: Shutdown of [email protected] mailing list Your comments are solicited: 1. should we create it? 2. is the name correct (position in the Usenet hierarchy)? 3. should cadence employees be encouraged or discouraged to participate? (I say encouraged) 4. should it be moderated? (I say not! Especically not by me!) According to accepted Usenet protocol: 1. this CFD is being posted to news.announce.newgroups and also to any other groups or mailing lists at all related to the proposed topic 2. this call for discussion will initiate 30 (or less) days of discussion (start: March 30, 1992, end: April 26, 1992) 3. followup discussion on this topic should be made to the newsgroup "news.groups". If you attempt a "followup" with your news reader, this will likely be automatic. Additional discussion can take place informally via mail. 4. if this call for discussion generates postive feedback on the creation of comp.sys.cadence, I will conduct a vote for a 21 to 31-day period following the discussion period. So let the discussions begin! -- Peter A.
