It was the chosen renderer for movies such as The Abyss, Terminator II, and Jurassic Park because of its power and extensibility. RenderMan is also often used as the final shader for a variety of modelers and animation packages. Interest in RenderMan will also increase with the recent release of Larry Gritz's shareware Blue Moon Rendering Tools, which adhere to the RenderMan interface standard. Personal e-mail I've received has indicated that there is a definite interest in such a group; I believe a newsgroup dedicated to RenderMan will prove to be an interesting and useful forum. === Rationale For The Name === comp.graphics.renderman appears to me to be the best name and hierarchy location for this newsgroup. Regarding the name, the only alternative mentioned was 'prman', but this is only a particular implementation of the RenderMan standard. 'renderman' is the name favored by most. I've considered several other locations for the group. Here's a list of the locations I've considered and my comments: comp.graphics.packages.renderman (The comp.graphics.packages hierarchy is yet to be established, and has been proposed in the currently ongoing xxx.kpt, xxx.alias, and xxx.lightwave newsgroups). The RenderMan interface standard isn't a package in the sense that it's not distributed by any single supplier. It encompasses a language standard, a shading standard, and a file-format standard. It is often used -with- what folks would call packages, but is generally not considered a package itself. comp.soft-sys.renderman This does appeal to me (and some others), but I don't think that RenderMan is what is generally considered a software system. Again, since it is usually only useful when -combined- with an application, most folks wouldn't consider RenderMan to be a package or a software system. comp.graphics.renderman This seems to be the most logical place for this newsgroup, particularly in the precedent of groups like comp.graphics.avs, comp.graphics.explorer, comp.graphics.opengl, and so forth. The two former groups in particular are like RenderMan in that they have associated data file formats and are extensible (though they are more "system-like" than RenderMan). === Proposed Charter === The comp.graphics.renderman newsgroup is intended for the discussion of the RenderMan standard (e.g. definition, semantics, usage, tips), the RenderMan shading language (e.g. posted shaders, questions, tips), particular RenderMan implementations, software that uses the RenderMan interface (e.g. RIB-producing modelers, third party shaders), and comparisons, comments and questions about RenderMan in general. === RFD Process === This Request For Discussion is being crossposted to the following newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups news.groups comp.graphics comp.graphics.animation comp.graphics.raytracing comp.graphics.algorithms This is the first request for discussion for this newsgroup. A request for discussion takes no less than 21 days from the time it was first posted to news.announce.newgroups. I will issue at least one more updated RFD before that period expires, and possibly more if the proposal changes dramatically. I plan to issue a Call For Votes at the end of 21 days, as I don't (at this time) foresee show-stopping debate. === What Now? === Now's the time to gripe. Don't like the name? Think the charter's a bit wacky? Think my placement of the group in the usenet hierarchy is dismaying? Speak up and spell out your views. This period is for the proponents of such a group to produce a well-thought-out and solid proposal; it works best when all of the proponents can work to concensus. Followups for this post have been directed to news.groups, where group proposals are discussed. If you would rather communicate with me directly, you can e-mail me at "[email protected]". === Post Script === Thanks to Larry Gritz and Chip Morningstar for their comments and suggestions in helping me to hammer out this RFD. -- Steve Hollasch, [email protected] From [email protected] Wed Oct 26 23:43:55 1994 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: [email protected] (Steve Hollasch) Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,comp.graphics,comp.graphics.animation,comp.graphics.raytracing,comp.graphics.algorithms Subject: RFD: comp.graphics.rendering.renderman Followup-To: news.groups Date: 26 Oct 1994 23:12:01 -0400 Organization: None Lines: 109 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: uunet news.announce.newgroups:5846 news.groups:121731 comp.graphics:63616 comp.graphics.animation:12859 comp.graphics.raytracing:6079 comp.graphics.algorithms:9644 === Request For Discussion (round two) === comp.graphics.rendering.renderman - The RenderMan interface & shading language === Rationale For The Group === RenderMan has been around for several years now, producing high-quality images while allowing developers to incorporate custom shaders to meet their needs. I believe a newsgroup dedicated to RenderMan will prove to be an interesting and useful forum. === Rationale For The Name === Since the last RFD, I've changed the proposed group location from comp.graphics.renderman to comp.graphics.rendering.renderman. This is to bring the location up-to-date with the currently ongoing comp.graphics reorganization. The name 'renderman' is still pretty much undisputed as the right name for the group. Again, since it is usually only useful when -combined- with an application, most folks wouldn't consider RenderMan to be a package or a software system. comp.graphics.renderman Seemed logical at first, but would now be out of place with the proposed reorganization of comp.graphics. === Proposed Charter === comp.graphics.rendering.renderman is an unmoderated newsgroup intended for the discussion of the RenderMan standard (e.g. definition, semantics, usage, tips), the RenderMan shading language (e.g. posted shaders, questions, tips), particular RenderMan implementations, software that uses the RenderMan interface (e.g. RIB-producing modelers, third party shaders), and comparisons, comments and questions about RenderMan in general. This group is NOT intended for the distribution of images or RIB files. Large data or binary files should be uploaded to appropriate FTP sites and announced on the newsgroup, but not posted directly. === RFD Process === This Request For Discussion is being crossposted to the following newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups news.groups comp.graphics comp.graphics.animation comp.graphics.raytracing comp.graphics.algorithms This is the second request for discussion for this newsgroup. A request for discussion takes no less than 21 days from the time it was first posted to news.announce.newgroups. If there are no more radical changes, the next post will be the actual Call For Votes. If you have any comments, you need to make them known now before it is too late. === What Now? === At this stage, things are fairly well settled. The big change since the first RFD is the location change to comp.graphics.rendering.renderman. I've floated this idea to the RenderMan mailing list, and have received enough supportive replies that I believe it will work well. If there is no great debate over this, I will soon proceed to the CFV. Followups for this post have been directed to news.groups, where group proposals are discussed.
