This is a formal request for discussion on the reorganization of the
OS/2 newsgroups (in the comp.os.os2.* hierarchy).

With the anticipated release of OS/2 2.0 on or before March 31, the
already heavy traffic in the OS/2 newsgroups is bound to grow even
more. After informal discussion in comp.os.os2.misc I'm issuing this
formal request for discussion.

The proposed changes are as follows:

(1) Delete comp.os.os2. This newsgroup is a vestige of the previous
reorganization. It is still present on many (if not all) sites, but
it has already been supplanted by comp.os.os2.misc.

(2) Add comp.os.os2.networking. This unmoderated newsgroup will
provide a forum for all OS/2 networking issues, including Novell,
TCP/IP, Lan Manager, Lan Server, peer-to-peer, DEC Pathworks, and so
forth. It will also cover OS/2 compatible network adapters, OS/2
network drivers, and running DOS/Windows networking environments under
OS/2 2.0.

(3) Add comp.os.os2.advocacy. This unmoderated newsgroup will be
similar in purpose and character to the comp.sys.amiga.advocacy
newsgroup, except that it will cover OS/2 opinions, comparisons with
other products, flames, future directions, and advocacy.

The two new groups will complement the existing comp.os.os2.misc,
comp.os.os2.programmer, and comp.os.os2.apps. The last group will
expand to include discussion of DOS/Windows applications running under
OS/2 2.0 (in addition to discussion of OS/2-specific applications), at
least for the time being. Note that further reorganization of the
OS/2 hierarchy is under informal discussion in comp.os.os2.misc.
However, this limited reorganization does not preclude future changes.

If you have any questions (but do not wish to post a public message
during the formal discussion period), please send them to
sip1@ellis.uchicago.edu.

This is the final Call for Votes for the creation of two new Usenet
newsgroups.

Voters to date appear at the end of this posting

(1) Proposed: comp.os.os2.networking. This unmoderated newsgroup will
provide a forum for all OS/2 networking issues, including Novell,
TCP/IP, LAN Manager, LAN Server, peer-to-peer, DEC Pathworks, and so
forth. It will also cover OS/2 compatible network adapters, OS/2
network drivers, and running DOS/Windows networking environments under
OS/2 2.0.

(2) Proposed: comp.os.os2.advocacy. This unmoderated newsgroup will
be similar in purpose and character to the comp.sys.amiga.advocacy
newsgroup, except that it will cover OS/2 opinions, comparisons with
other products, flames, future directions, and advocacy.

Votes on both these newsgroups will be accepted from 12:01 a.m.
Central Time (6:01 a.m. GMT), March 26, until noon Central Time (6:00
p.m. GMT), April 26.

DO NOT POST to cast your vote -- please follow the procedure described
below.

(1) You may send a vote to ONLY ONE of the following addresses ONCE:

To vote "yes" for comp.os.os2.networking, please send a one
line message with "YES: comp.os.os2.networking" in both the
Subject line and body of the text to yes.os2@netcom.com.

To vote "no" for comp.os.os2.networking, please send a one
line message with "NO: comp.os.os2.networking" in both the
Subject line and body of the text to no.os2@netcom.com.

(2) You may send another vote to ONLY ONE of the following addresses ONCE:

To vote "yes" for comp.os.os2.advocacy, please send a one line
message with "YES: comp.os.os2.advocacy" in both the Subject
line and body of the text to aye.os2@netcom.com.

To vote "no" for comp.os.os2.advocacy, please send a one line
message with "NO: comp.os.os2.advocacy" in both the Subject
line and body of the text to nay.os2@netcom.com.

Votes will be acknowledged (without indication of how particular
individuals voted) and the Call for Votes will be repeated
approximately once per week during the voting period. At the close of
voting a full summary (including how particular individuals voted)
will be posted to allow the opportunity for corrections (during a five
day period).

If you have any questions (prior to casting your vote), please send
them to sip1@ellis.uchicago.edu. DO NOT MAIL QUESTIONS TO THE VOTING

(1) Proposed: comp.os.os2.advocacy. This unmoderated newsgroup will
be similar in purpose and character to the comp.sys.amiga.advocacy
newsgroup, except that it will cover OS/2 opinions, comparisons with
other products, flames, future directions, and advocacy.

(2) Proposed: comp.os.os2.networking. This unmoderated newsgroup will
provide a forum for all OS/2 networking issues, including Novell,
TCP/IP, LAN Manager, LAN Server, peer-to-peer, DEC Pathworks, and so
forth. It will also cover OS/2 compatible network adapters, OS/2
network drivers, and running DOS/Windows networking environments under
OS/2 2.0.
