This is a REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION concerning the creation of an UNMODERATED
newsgroup comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.

NAME:
        comp.sys.ibm.pc.games

Group names have previously been discussed on rec.games.misc,
and the overwhelming favorite, because of the previous precedent of
groups such as comp.sys.mac.games, comp.sys.amiga.games, and
comp.binaries.ibm.pc, is comp.sys.ibm.pc.games. It is recognized that
"ibm.pc" does not cover the entire range of machines which are
affected by this group, such as PS/2s and other software compatibles.
However, "ibm.pc" seems to be the recognized name for this group of
machines in the rest of the hierarchy.

STATUS:
        unmoderated

CHARTER:

To provide a forum for the discussion of games which run on
the IBM PC family of computers.

	For example:
	  o Discussion of upcoming games
o Discussion of current and past games
	  o Requests for help
	  o Hints
o Personal sales and trading of games (not copies!)
o Discussion of new demos and their locations

These are taken directly from the current discussions taking place
	on rec.games.misc.

RATIONALE:

This has been discussed extensively in rec.games.misc prior to
this RFD. It has been much discussed in the past, but failed due to
the lack of anyone dumb enough to take on the resulting work.

The primary motive is to get the huge amount traffic regarding
IBM games off of rec.games.misc, where it now dominates the group. PC
compatible users can read only about their games, if they choose, and
those who aren't interested in them will have a much less unwieldy
rec.games.misc, where other games under its charter can be discussed
more freely.

A quick poll was taken on rec.games.misc, which resulted in
over 50 email letters in a single day from those who were very
interested in creating the new group. This hopefully will make it
almost a certainty that the excess of 100 yes votes will be gathered.
Both groups (the PC users and the non-PC users) have expressed support
for this move.

Comments on the group creation and name are welcome. Please post
all responses on

	news.groups

which is the followup group for this message, and not on rec.games.misc.

OFFICIAL CALL FOR VOTES FOR NEW GROUP

NAME:
	comp.sys.ibm.pc.games

STATUS:
	unmoderated

CHARTER:
To provide a forum for the discussion of games for the IBM PC or
compatible machines. This is not just limited to MS-DOS, but

o Personal sales and trading of games. Not for commercial sales
or piracy. Any risk assumed is your own.
o Discussion of locations of new demos and ftp sites

RATIONALE:

It has been much discussed in the past, but failed due to the
lack of anyone dumb enough to take on the resulting work. The RFD has
received overwhelming support in rec.games.misc and other interested
groups.

The primary motive is to get the huge amount traffic regarding
IBM games off of rec.games.misc, where it can be self-contained.
IBMers can read only about their games, if they choose, and those who
aren't interested in them will have a much more less smothering
rec.games.misc, where board games and other games under its charter
can be discussed more freely.

We have discussed group names, and the overwhelming favorite,
because of the previous precedent of groups such as comp.sys.mac.games,
comp.sys.amiga.games, and comp.binaries.ibm.pc, is comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.
It is recognized that "ibm.pc" does not cover the entire range of
machines, such as PS/2s and other software compatibles. However,
"ibm.pc" seems to be a recognized name for this group of machines in
the rest of the hierarchy. We are also aware of the comp.os.msdos
hierarchy, but while most of the posts will probably be about MS-DOS
games, the group is not limited to that.

VOTING:

This vote will run from now till 23:59 GMT, Monday, May 4, 1992.
The date/time on your message must be before this time, or it will
not be counted. Only votes recieved by email as detailed below
	will be counted.

There will be two other CFVs and mass Acknowledgements during
this time. The final acknowledgement and totals postings will
be done on Wednesday, May 6, 1992.

	Send all votes to

		[email protected]

(You can just reply to this post...) Our mail is usually very
reliable, but if it bounces, try again later.

The first line of your post should be either

		I vote YES on comp.sys.ibm.pc.games

	or
		I vote NO on comp.sys.ibm.pc.games

You may add comments below that, but only the first line will
be used to determine your vote. If you do not use YES and NO
in that line, your vote will be discarded.

If you vote more than once, your last vote will be the one counted.
If you are revoting, please add a line underneath commenting on
this, to make sure we notice.

MY ACTIONS:

I did the RFD for comp.sys.ibm.pc.games and am doing the CFV.
This group has not been particularly controversial. To keep it
that way, I will not be discussing the proposal in any way which
involves my expressing a positive or negative opinion on it. I
will not be doing any public or private campaigning for or against
it. I will, on public groups, encourage people to vote, but will
not take a stand for or against and will encourage both YES and NO
	voters to vote.

3rd (and last) OFFICIAL CALL FOR VOTES FOR NEW GROUP and MASS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

(If you've already voted, don't vote again. If you've already voted,
your "From:" line should be in the list at the bottom.)

NAME:
	comp.sys.ibm.pc.games

STATUS:
	unmoderated

CHARTER:
To provide a forum for the discussion of games for the IBM PC or
compatible machines. This is not just limited to MS-DOS, but
extends to OS/2, Windows (Yes, it's not really an OS, but...)
and anything else which can run on an IBM PC compatible.

For example (not to be taken as comprehensive):
	o Discussion of upcoming games
	o Discussion of software companies
o Discussion of current and past games
	o Requests for help
	o Hints and spoilers
o Personal sales and trading of games.

If you use YES and NO in that
line, your vote will be discarded.

I realize that if I do something stupid it could
throw the new group proposal in jeopardy, so I'll be on best
	behavior.

Voting on the proprosed creation of comp.sys.ibm.pc.games ended
midnight, May 4, as stated in the CFVs. It recieved 516 yes votes and
52 no votes, thereby passing both criteria: 100 more yes votes than no
votes, and a 2/3 majority of yes votes.

There were some duplicate yes and no votes, but there were no switched
votes (and thus no question of which vote was correct). There were
a handful of votes dated after the deadline which have been ignored.

NAME:
        comp.sys.ibm.pc.games
STATUS:
        unmoderated
CHARTER:
To provide a forum for the discussion of games for the IBM PC or
compatible machines. This is not just limited to MS-DOS, but
extends to OS/2, Windows (Yes, it's not really an OS, but...)
and anything else which can run on an IBM PC compatible.

For example (not to be taken as comprehensive):
        o Discussion of upcoming games
        o Discussion of software companies
o Discussion of current and past games
        o Requests for help
        o Hints and spoilers
o Personal sales and trading of games. Not for commercial sales
or piracy. Any risk assumed is your own.
o Discussion of locations of new demos and ftp sites

The majority of the current rec.games.misc FAQ will be transfered over
to comp.sys.ibm.pc.games by the current FAQ-editor.

The votes follow. If you are listed twice or you didn't get counted,
please mention it for completeness. However, it will take some
massive irregularities to change the outcome of the vote.

As a note on the NO votes, the majority of the comments regarded an
objection to the name. Hopefully these people will enjoy the group
even though it is "misnamed."

After weeks of looking and searching, I have determined that there is no
newsgroup for discussing games that are played on an ms-dos machine. I
believe that there could be a need for this as there are lots of
frustrating games for ms-dos machines, and probably lots of frustrated
people as well!

Therefore, I propose comp.sys.ibm.pc.games, an unmoderated newsgroup for
the discussion of games and gaming stratagies that are played on an
ms-dos compatible machine running ms-dos.

There is currently both comp.sys.amiga.games, and comp.sys.mac.games,
both of which have a relatively healthy amount discussion. Why not add
one for ms-dos machines?

Anyway, I probably missed something somewhere as this is my first time
posting a CFD, so if I missed anything I sincerely apologize to the net
for the waste of bandwidth, but if I haven't, then let's get discussing!
