From [email protected] Sat Apr 4 02:24:29 1992 Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,alt.gopher,alt.wais,comp.protocols.tcp-ip,bit.listserv.cwis-l From: Edward VielmettiSubject: RFD: comp.infosystems.gopher Followup-To: news.groups Organization: UUNET Communications Services Date: Thu, 2 Apr 1992 16:05:52 GMT This is a request for discussion and a proposal for a new newsgroup, "comp.infosystems.gopher", to replace the existing group "alt.gopher". For more information see alt.gopher or look at the distribution on boombox.micro.umn.edu:/pub/gopher/. There is a demonstration system which you can connect to by telnetting to consultant.micro.umn.edu and logging in as "gopher"; the services there are also available as a native application for Macs, PCs, NeXT machines, VMS, IBM mainframes, X Windows, and of course a Unix shell. Gopher is a distributed information system; menus within a gopher can be made up of resources on the local system, on other gophers, or even to other non-gopher systems via gateways. There are front ends in place for telnet, WAIS, finger, FTP, archie, and other internet resources. Building your own gopher is as easy as making a few links to other systems that you like and putting some ordinary text files out in a public area. This is *not* a call for votes; Usenet protocol suggests about a month's worth of discussion to make sure that the name is right and to get people aware that there's something going on. If you want to discuss substantive matters the group alt.gopher is ready there to take them. On the other hand if you want to argue about names, that's what news.groups is for. (This name was suggested by the reaction to the "comp.infosystems.wais" vote that's in progress; WAIS and gopher fill a similar sort of need on the net so it seems reasonable to put them close together in the hierarchy.) When a real call for votes is issued, you will know about it. -- Edward Vielmetti, vice president for research, MSEN Inc. The Internet Gopher is a distributed information system originally developed at the U of Minnesota. The system was originally designed around the need to build a campus-wide information system, but as it has developed Gopher is being used to do much more. The current system provides tools like - gateways to on-line library catalogs and other telnet-based systems - archives of electronic books and journals - access to archie and anonymous FTP archives - menu-driven access to Human Genome project research materials - a simple front end to WAIS, the Wide Area Information System - multimedia, using the RFC 1341 (MIME) e-mail extensions - distributed hypertext in combination with the W3 (World Wide Web) system Gopher is still under active development; the newsgroup alt.gopher has an active following of users, developers, and people working to add more materials to the systems. How to vote. ------------ (Please read carefully) Yes votes are to be sent to one of the following addresses: [email protected] [email protected] Yes votes will be tallied as usual. In addition, the gopher-yes votes will be indexed with WAIS and made available via gopher in an effort to help people locate others with similar development or research interests. Please include in your "gopher-yes" vote a description of how you are using Gopher, whether you have it installed at your site, and what additional material you'd like to see appear in servers. These messages will be made public, so if you're shy send the vote to "gopher-yes-private". No votes are to be sent to [email protected] [email protected] Again, the no votes will be made public if they are sent to "gopher-no", so vote accordingly. Vote schedule. -------------- Votes will be collected for 30 days following the posting of this call, with the final decision to be made 5 days after that. Procedural questions should go to news.groups, actual discussion to alt.gopher. Administrivia should land in my mailbox ([email protected]) Vote early and often. --------------------- Duplicate votes will be eliminated during the counting process, so don't worry that your duplicate vote will be counted multiple times. However, if you do decide to vote multiple times, please include more information about what you're interested in about gopher, so that people can find you more readily once the vote is through. -- Edward Vielmetti, vice president for research, Msen Inc.
