                   reorganization of comp.os.os2.*

INTRODUCTION:

   This is a Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creating of five OS/2
   newsgroups and the splitting of two existing ones into seven:

      * create comp.os.os2.marketplace
      * create comp.os.os2.networking.apps.{www, mail-news, misc}
      * create comp.os.os2.comm
      * split comp.os.os2.setup into {video, storage, install, misc}
      * split comp.os.os2.apps into {word-proc, utilities, misc}

   A pointer to this article will be cross-posted to:
      * comp.os.os2.setup
      * comp.os.os2.apps
      * comp.os.os2.networking.tcp-ip


RATIONALE:

   Usenet traffic is getting bigger and bigger, and OS/2-related traffic is
   not exempt.  With approximately 13,000 posts (according to the Usenet
   Readership Report for Jan 95) in comp.os.os2.{networking.tcp-ip, apps,
   setup} combined, there is a need to split these OS/2 newsgroups into more
   managable pieces.  Here are the number of posts per month according to the
   Usenet Readership Report for June 94 as compared to January 95:

   As a comparison, here are the number of posts per month for equivalent
   MS Windows newsgroups (each number for comp.os.ms-windows.apps.* is the
   sum of comp.os.ms-windows.apps.{word-proc, utilities, comm, financial,
   misc}):

   OS/2 Warp 3 (the one that can use your existing unoptimized version of
   Windows made by Microsoft, but I will call it Red Warp due to the red
   spine of its package) and OS/2 Warp 3 with DOS/Windows (the one that
   includes a version of Windows that has been optimized by IBM--I will call
   it Blue Warp for the blue spine) both include BonusPak.  BonusPak is a
   variety of software ranging from a "works" package to an Internet
   Connection package.  Red Warp, which has been on PC Magazine's Top Ten list
   four times (reaching the number one spot twice), has caused a surge in the
   number of posts in the OS/2 newsgroups since its release last year.
   Traffic is expected to further increase with the recently-released Blue
   Warp, as well as upcoming versions of Warp for SMP, Warp with bundled
   networking support, and Warp for PowerPC.

   Therefore, it is proposed to create new OS/2 newsgroups and split up some
   existing ones.  The existing comp.os.os2.setup newsgroup would be split
   into comp.os.os2.setup.{video, storage, installation, misc} to discuss
   video hardware/drivers, disk/tape hardware/drivers, installing/tweaking
   OS/2, and miscellaneous hardware/drivers.  The existing comp.os.os2.apps
   would be split into comp.os.os2.apps.{word-proc, utilities, misc} to
   discuss running DOS, Windows, and OS/2 word processors, utilities, and
   miscellaneous software under OS/2.

   On comp.os.os2.misc there was discussion of two different plans on where
   multimedia and communications newsgroups were to be placed.  The first plan
   split each into the setup and apps hierarchy.  The second plan had each as
   a specialized newsgroup combining setup and apps together.  Here are the
   plans:

   Plan #1:
      * rename comp.os.os2.apps.multimedia (from comp.os.os2.multimedia)
      * create comp.os.os2.setup.multimedia
      * create comp.os.os2.apps.comm
      * create comp.os.os2.setup.comm

   Plan #2:
      * leave comp.os.os2.multimedia as is
      * create comp.os.os2.comm

   The comp.os.os2.misc readers decided that Plan #2 was better because
   it was simpler, as well as avoided unneeded crossposting.  Therefore,
   comp.os.os2.comm is proposed.

   The creation of comp.os.os2.marketplace is also proposed.  This newsgroup
   would filter OS/2-related advertisements, employment offerings/resumes,
   forsale/wanted, and price of OS/2 products discussions from other OS/2
   newsgroups.  As a bonus, it would reduce crossposting among the other
   newsgroups (e.g. "I went to  yesterday and
   they had , , and 
   on sale!!!!").

   The Internet Connection package in the BonusPak has generated much traffic.
   This package contains a license for Web Explorer, NewsReader/2, Ultimedia
   Mail/2 Lite, and other networking software.  It is proposed to create
   comp.os.os2.networking.apps.{www, mail-news, misc} to discuss OS/2-related
   WWW software, mail and news software, and miscellaneous networking
   software.  These newgroups would be placed in comp.os.os2.networking.apps.*
   rather than comp.os.os2.apps.networking.* because network software belongs
   in the networking hierarchy in the same way programmer's software belongs
   in the programmer hierarchy.


CHARTERS:

   * create comp.os.os2.marketplace
   Unmoderated discussion of OS/2-related products and services:
      a) "forsale" and "wanted" of OS/2-related products
      b) Discussion of companies that offer OS/2 products/services
      c) Commercial product/service advertisements

   Unmoderated discussion of running DOS, Windows, and OS/2 World Wide
   Web (WWW) browsers under OS/2.

   * create comp.os.os2.networking.apps.mail-news
   Unmoderated discussion of running DOS, Windows and OS/2 email and
   news software under OS/2.

   * create comp.os.os2.networking.apps.misc
   Unmoderated discussion of running DOS, Windows and OS/2 networking
   apps and utilities under OS/2 that are not covered in other OS/2
   networking newsgroups (eg telnet, ping, etc).

   * create comp.os.os2.comm
   Unmoderated OS/2-related discussion of fax/modem hardware/drivers
   (including UARTs), as well as running DOS, Windows and OS/2 fax/modem
   software under OS/2.

   * create comp.os.os2.setup.video
   Unmoderated OS/2-related discussion of video hardware/drivers.

   * create comp.os.os2.setup.storage
   Unmoderated OS/2-related discussion of floppy, hard disk, and tape-backup
   hardware/drivers (including drive controllers).  Note that discussion of
   CD-ROM drives (as well as sound cards, multimedia upgrade kits, and
   multimedia software) still belong in comp.os.os2.multimedia.

   * create comp.os.os2.setup.install
   Unmoderated discussion of installing OS/2:
      a) Discussing the compatibility of complete computer systems.
      b) Installation tips and problem solving.
      c) Disk partitioning (including Boot Manager, Dual Boot, HPFS vs.
         FAT FS, coexistance of other operating systems, etc).
      d) "Tweaking" OS/2's performance (e.g. swapfile location and size,
         system startup values such as MAXWAIT, etc.)

   * rename comp.os.os2.setup.misc (from comp.os.os2.setup)
   Unmoderated OS/2-related discussion of hardware/drivers not covered in
   other OS/2 newsgroups (e.g., printers, keyboards, mice, etc).  Note that
   discussion of CD-ROM and sound card issues belongs in the existing
   comp.os.os2.multimedia.

   * create comp.os.os2.apps.word-proc
   Unmoderated discussion of running DOS, Windows, and OS/2 word processors
   under OS/2, including the word processing specific module of "works" and
   "suites".

   * create comp.os.os2.apps.utilities
   Unmoderated discussion of running DOS, Windows, and OS/2 utilities
   (e.g. backup, archivers, screen savers, virus scanners, etc) under OS/2.

   * rename comp.os.os2.apps.misc (from comp.os.os2.apps)
   Unmoderated discussion of running DOS, Windows, and OS/2 applications under
   OS/2 that are not covered in other OS/2 newsgroups.  Note that discussion
   of programmer software belongs in the appropriate comp.os.os2.programmer.*
   newsgroup, and discussion of multimedia software belongs in
   comp.os.os2.multimedia.


SCHEDULE:

   The proposed newsgroups were discussed on the OS/2 newsgroups throughout
   February.  The discussion period is expected to last approximately 30 days
   starting with the day this RFD is posted.  The voting period is expected
   to begin shortly after the discussion period is over--do not vote until
   the Call For Votes (CFV) is posted.  I plan to have the Usenet Volunteer
   Votetakers (UVV) handle the votetaking procedure.

INTRODUCTION:

   This is the second Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of five
   new OS/2 newsgroups and the splitting of one into three (all eight of the
   proposals are unmoderated):

      * create comp.os.os2.marketplace
      * create comp.os.os2.networking.www
      * create comp.os.os2.mail-news
      * create comp.os.os2.comm
      * create comp.os.os2.utilities
      * split comp.os.os2.setup into c.o.o.setup.{video, storage, misc}

   A pointer to this article will be cross-posted to:

   This RFD contains sections on:  changes from the 1st RFD; newsgroup lines;
   rationale; charters; future hierarchy structure; and a schedule.


CHANGES FROM 1st RFD:

   Based on feedback from the 1st RFD, here are the changes to the 2nd RFD:

      * Creating comp.os.os2.networking.apps.{www, mail-news, misc} has been
        changed to comp.os.os2.networking.www and comp.os.os2.mail-news.
        Respondents did not like the "apps" branch because networking apps
        are also hardware/driver dependent (much like communication apps are).
        Respondents also did not like "mail-news" to be in the "networking"
        branch because offline mail/news software did not use networking.
        The traffic that was to go in the proposed c.o.o.networking.apps.misc
        group will remain in the existing c.o.o.networking.tcp-ip.

      * Creating comp.os.os2.apps.{word-proc, utilities, misc} has been
        changed to comp.os.os2.utilities.  Respondents did not like the
        "word-proc" branch because of potential cross-posting in discussions
        of, say, linking documents with spreadsheets, for example.  As for
        the "utilities" branch, utilities are not really apps.  Utilities
        allow the users to use their computers better, while apps are reasons
        for buying a computer in the first place.  For example, people don't
        buy computers to run screen savers or virus scanners; they buy
        computers to run word processors and spreadsheets.

      * Creating comp.os.os2.setup.{video, storage, install, misc} has been
        changed to just comp.os.os2.setup.{video, storage, misc}.  Respondents
        felt that the "install" branch was somewhat redundant with the "misc"
        branch, so now they are combined into just "misc".

      * Some the the charters of the groups have been clarified.  Also,
        the charter for comp.os.os2.setup.storage now includes discussion
        of CD-ROM drive issues since not everyone that uses CD-ROM drives
        is also interested in multimedia issues.

      * A section for the newsgroup lines and another section for what the
        OS/2 newsgroup hierarchy would look like have been added.


NEWSGROUP LINES:

   Here are the newsgroup lines.  I forgot to include them in the 1st RFD
   although they are not required until the CFV.  Including them now in the
   RFD stage will allow feedback on them.  Note that the format is the
   newsgroup name, a tab character, and a brief description of the newsgroup
   (all must be less than 80 characters).

   Note that discussion of multimedia-related hardware/drivers still belongs
   in comp.os.os2.multimedia.

   Unmoderated OS/2-related discussion of floppy, hard disk, CD-ROM drive,
   and tape-backup hardware/drivers (including drive controllers).
   Discussion can include:
      - compatibility
      - configuring
      - new and upcoming releases
      - bugs, work-arounds, and bug-fixes

   * rename comp.os.os2.setup.misc (from comp.os.os2.setup)

   Unmoderated discussion of running DOS, Windows, and OS/2 general-purpose
   utilities (e.g. backup, archivers, compression, screen savers, virus
   scanners, shells and disk/file/program/task managers, defraggers, INI and
   specialized CONFIG.SYS editors, etc) under OS/2.  A loose definition of a
   utility is software that protects your data, makes your computer run
   better, lets you use your computer more efficiently, or helps to resolve
   computer problems.  Note that topic-specific utilities (e.g.  networking-
   specific, programming-specific, game-specific, etc such as ping, source
   code revision controllers, Doom patchers/editors, etc) do not belong here.
   Note that apps such as word processors, text editors, spreadsheets, PIMs,
   etc belong in comp.os.os2.apps.  Discussion of general-purpose utilities
   can include:
      - compatibility
      - configuring and using
      - new and upcoming releases
      - bugs, work-arounds, and bug-fixes

   2nd RFD is successful, then the voting period is expected to begin
   sometime between March 30 through April 9.  I plan to have the Usenet
   Volunteer Votetakers (UVV) handle the votetaking procedure.

soared.  Here are the numbers for posts per month (obtained from the Usenet
Readership Report) for OS/2 newsgroups that are affected by this CFV.  The
combined number of posts per month rises from 3829 to 13183.  Numbers for
equivalent MS-Windows newsgroups are included for comparison, which rise
>from 4369 to only 6302.

   Unmoderated discussion of running DOS, Windows, and OS/2 general-purpose
   utilities (e.g. backup, archivers, compression, screen savers, virus
   scanners, shells and disk/file/program/task managers, defraggers, INI and
   specialized CONFIG.SYS editors, etc) under OS/2.  A loose definition of a
   utility is software that protects your data, makes your computer run
   better, lets you use your computer more efficiently, or helps to resolve
   computer problems.  Note that topic-specific utilities (e.g.  networking-
   specific, programming-specific, game-specific, etc such as ping, source
