REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION Create an UNMODERATED Usenet newsgroup called "comp.os.msdos.kids". This announcement is cross-posted to newsgroups and mailing lists whose readers may have an interest in the discussion about the new group, including comp.sys.ibm.pc.games, comp.os.msdos.apps, comp.os.msdos.misc, comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc, misc.kids, and the mailing list ibmpc-kids. Follow-up discussion will take place in "news.groups". PURPOSE The newsgroup "comp.os.msdos.kids" would be a forum for discussing all aspects of the use of ibm-pc compatible computers by children, including games software, educational software, and hardware. Topics such as software and hardware selection and comparisons, reviews of software, and troubleshooting will be discussed. It is anticipated that the predominate readership of the newsgroup would be parents, but participation by professionals in the educational system as well as children will be encouraged. A "comp.os.msdos.kids" newsgroup would provide its readers an opportunity to discuss their experiences, ideas, and information with others. RATIONALE Much of the discussion related to the use of computers by children takes place on a number of existing newsgroups, particularly misc.kids and comp.sys.ibm.pc.games. A mailing list was recently created for the discussion of such topics, however the traffic on the list in it's first few weeks was greater than anticipated, taxing local mail relays as well as the list coordinator. It is likely that past traffic patterns on newsgroups has been sparse due to a lack of a central forum. The creation of a "comp.os.msdos.kids" newsgroup will provide such a central forum for discussions. It is hoped that the creation of a group "comp.os.msdos.kids" will encourage and facilitate a greater amount of sharing of information and experiences by individuals. Alternatives to placing the group in the comp.os.msdos hierarchy are welcome. Possibilities include but are not limited to: comp.sys.ibm.pc.kids comp.apps.kids comp.os.msdos.apps.kids misc.kids.computers NEWSGROUP CREATION The discussion period will be from 30 January 1993 to 2 March 1993. Please post all discussion in "news.groups". If a consensus is reached by the end of the discussion period, a CFV (Call for Votes) will be posted at that time. The voting period will last for 30 days. -- Bob Larson Illinois State Water Survey [email protected] 2204 Griffith Drive Voice: (217)333-7955 Champaign, IL 61820 Fax: (217)333-6540 From [email protected] Thu Mar 11 11:33:36 1993 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: [email protected] (Bob Larson) Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,comp.sys.mac.games,comp.sys.ibm.pc.games,misc.kids Subject: CFV: misc.kids.computer Followup-To: poster Date: 11 Mar 1993 01:25:39 -0500 Organization: University of Illinois at Urbana Lines: 78 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: uunet news.announce.newgroups:3341 news.groups:67877 comp.sys.mac.games:23698 comp.sys.ibm.pc.games:41334 misc.kids:71462 This is a CALL FOR VOTES for or against the creation of a new, unmoderated Usenet newsgroup called "misc.kids.computer". Following the thirty-day discussion period just ended, it is proposed that the group misc.kids.computer be created as a vehicle for discussions of all aspects of the use of computers by children. THE VOTE To vote for or against the creation of misc.kids.computer, send an E-mail message to the following address: To vote YES: [email protected] To vote NO: [email protected] DO NOT post to Usenet. Do NOT reply to this message. The wording of the message can be anything you like, as long as it is an *unambiguous* vote for or against the creation of the newsgroup. Suggested wording: "I vote FOR the creation of misc.kids.computer as proposed." "I vote AGAINST the creation of misc.kids.computer as proposed." Only votes *mailed* to the above addresses will count. Any ambiguous wording, such as "I vote for misc.kids.computer, as long as ...", or "I vote NO unless ...", will not count. VOTING PERIOD: Votes will be accepted from now through 1 April 1993. Votes postmarked after 1 April 1993 will not be counted. At weekly intervals during the voting period, a reminder Call For Votes a "mass acknowledgment" of votes.will be posted to the net. This is a list of people whose votes have been received (but not how they voted). If you have voted, but are not on the list, send your vote again. (Don't worry, only one vote per person will count.) AFTER THE VOTE: Shortly after 1 April 1993, the results will be posted to the net. This will consist of a list of all those who voted, and how they voted. Make sure that your vote is properly recorded here; there is a five-day grace period during which you can correct the record. After the five-day period, the vote is final. If the "YES" votes outnumber the "NO" votes by a 2:1 ratio, and also by a margin of 100 votes or more, then the news.announce.newgroups moderator will send out a message for the creation of misc.kids.computer. If the "YES" votes fail to attain this margin of victory, then under the Usenet guidelines, the idea of the misc.kids.computer newsgroup will not be entertained again for at least another six months. If you have an opinion for or against the creation of the group misc.kids.computer, please vote. If you have questions or problems, E-mail me. CHARTER The unmoderated group misc.kids.computer will function as a vehicle for discussions of all aspects of the use of computers by children. Discussion will not be limited to any particular platform or operating system. Topic may include, but will not be limited to: game software, educational software, hardware choices, and other topics as long as the topic pertains to the use of computers by children. It is anticipated that the predominate readership of the newsgroup would be parents, but participation by professionals in the educational system will be encouraged. -- Bob Larson Illinois State Water Survey [email protected] 2204 Griffith Drive Voice: (217)333-7955 Champaign, IL 61820 Fax: (217)333-6540 From [email protected] Mon Mar 29 20:38:24 1993 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: [email protected] (Bob Larson) Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,comp.sys.mac.games,comp.sys.ibm.pc.games,misc.kids Subject: 2nd CFV and VOTE ACK: misc.kids.computer Followup-To: poster Date: 26 Mar 1993 11:05:36 -0500 Organization: University of Illinois at Urbana Lines: 250 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: uunet news.announce.newgroups:3379 news.groups:68537 comp.sys.mac.games:24498 comp.sys.ibm.pc.games:45037 misc.kids:73013 This is a 2nd CALL FOR VOTES for or against the creation of a new, unmoderated Usenet newsgroup called "misc.kids.computer" and an acknowledgement of votes recieved thus far.
