The postings currently appearing in the group are both many and varied in topic. This has led to some problems:  1) Some sites do not want to carry news.answers because it is too large.  Although it is true that this problem can, to some extent, be avoided by asking feeds to put "!news.answers" in their sys files, so that only articles cross-posted to news.answers (and therefore not taking up additional space in the news spool) are fed, some administrators are not knowledgeable enough to know about this or do not want to go to the trouble.  2) The amount of traffic in the group is large enough that some users are finding it difficult to actively read the group in order to "find out what's out there" on the net.  The ability for people to actually read the newsgroup on a day-to-day basis was one of the purposes outlined in the newsgroup's charter, so if the ability to do this is being challenged, there is reason to be concerned.  3) Some users and administrators are disturbed by the mingling of periodic postings of many different sorts in the newsgroup.  In the extreme, for example, I have received complaints from some users who find some of the postings in news.answers "offensive" and have asked me to withdraw my permission for those postings to appear in the newsgroup.  4) The burden on me as the moderator of news.answers has increased. Although it is certainly not yet unbearable, it's getting there.  Several people have suggested, as a solution to this problem, the creation of separate "answers" newsgroups for each newsgroup hierarchy.  Periodic postings would be cross-posted to the "answers" newsgroups of the hierarchies of their "home" newsgroups, in addition to being cross-posted to news.answers (for example, an FAQ posting for the "comp.foo" newsgroup would be cross-posted to news.answers and comp.answers in addition to comp.foo).  Then, people could choose to read one or more of the single-hierarchy "answers" newsgroups, or to news.answers.  Furthermore, administrators could choose to receive a subset of the "answers" newsgroups.  These proposals have taken two forms: either (a) create "rec.answers", "comp.answers", etc., or (b) create "news.answers.comp", "news.answers.rec", etc.  Both have advantages and disadvantages.  The former has the advantage of isolating periodic postings in the hierarchies in which they are most relevant; the latter has the advantage of putting all of the "answers" newsgroups in one place, so that they are easy to find or to filter out of news feeds.  Another suggestion has been to not actually officially create the "answers" newsgroups.  Instead, periodic posting authors could simply list the relevant "virtual" newsgroups in their Newsgroups lines, and then administrators who wish to store periodic postings could create the newsgroups locally.  This has the advantage of not requiring an official Usenet vote to create the groups, and of allowing administrators to choose which of the "answers" groups they want simply by creating them.  Disadvantages include that many administrators won't bother, that if the names are not officially created, they are not officially "reserved" and therefore might be used later for something else (although that is doubtful), and that some sites will have a problem with postings to newsgroups that do not exist.  My personal preference is to hold a call for votes to create *.answers groups for all of the mainstream hierarchies, with the moderators for those groups initially the same as the moderator for news.answers (i.e., me), although the work may later be divided among multiple moderators (I'd certainly like to see that happen :-).
