Some possible areas of discussion would be: manufacturing, process engineering (i.e.- coating, bleaching, deinking, etc), process controls, design and project engineering, industry trends, safety and environmental issues, maintenance, etc. Since the primary focus of this group is technical discussion about the industry, any discussion about any legal/moral issues (i.e.- dioxins polluting the environment, etc.) should be discussed elsewhere. RATIONALE Although there are some newsgroups (which are cross-posted with this RFD) which occasionally discuss a pulp and paper related topic, there is currently no newsgroup with the primary focus on the pulp and paper industry. Currently, a reader interested in pulp and paper industry topics much search through large volumes of information in other newsgroups and scan possibly hundreds of topics to find one of interest. Since the newsgroup focuses on an "industry" and not on a discipline, readers from a variety of technical backgrounds ( chemical, electrical, controls, mechanical, etc.) would participate in this group. This newsgroup would also provide a great opportunity for networking with others in the pulp and paper industry. Many people working in this industry (especially at the manufacturing sites...mills) have limited access to networking with peers at other locations. Currently, there are technical publications and seminars, but only a few have the time or the budget to participate. Due to the many positive responses from a brief posting describing this new group in other newsgroups, and inquiries about Internet newsgroups in pulp and paper trade journals, there is shown to be a substantial interest in the formation of such a group. DISTRIBUTION Besides being posted in "news.announce.newgroups" and "news.groups", this RFD is also posted in the following groups: sci.engr, sci.engr.manufacturing, sci.engr.control, sci.engr.chem, sci.environment, sci.engr.mech From [email protected] Mon May 8 18:45:11 1995 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: [email protected] (Bill Aten) Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,sci.engr,sci.engr.chem,sci.engr.control,sci.engr.manufacturing,sci.engr.mech,sci.environment Subject: CFV: misc.industry.pulp-and-paper Followup-To: poster Date: 8 May 1995 12:42:49 -0400 Organization: Usenet Volunteer Votetakers Lines: 146 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Expires: 30 May 1995 00:00:00 GMT Message-ID: References: <[email protected]> Reply-To: [email protected] NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: gs2.UU.NET news.announce.newgroups:6774 news.groups:148317 sci.engr:16030 sci.engr.chem:7738 sci.engr.control:5516 sci.engr.manufacturing:5430 sci.engr.mech:14503 sci.environment:66451 FIRST CALL FOR VOTES (of 2) unmoderated group misc.industry.pulp-and-paper Newsgroups line: misc.industry.pulp-and-paper Technical topics in the pulp and paper industry. Votes must be received by 23:59:59 UTC, 29 May 1995. This vote is being conducted by a neutral third party. For voting questions only, contact the votetaker, Bill Aten . For questions about the proposed group, contact the proponents, James and Yolanda Ruzicka . RATIONALE This is the rationale for the proposal as submitted by the proponent. The RFD has developed 97% positive response for it's creation. In addition to institutional organizations such as TAPPI, IPST, SUNY, UBC representing thousands of papermakers, individuals from Europe, Asia, Australia, the US and Canada have replied indicating support for such a forum. Articles written in the trade journals have called for a newsgroup to be formed for this industry. Support has come from outside the paper industry as well, with suppliers to the industry and environmental concern groups indicating a desire to participate. The formation of misc.industry.pulp-and-paper will provide the worldwide access to resources, needed and requested by the industry, that newsgroups were intentioned for. Do not erase anything between these lines, and do not change the group name. In other words, remove everything except the ballot. It will be greatly appreciated by the votetaker if you do NOT forward the entire CFV back to me--this mail is archived. Give your name on the line that asks for it. To vote, place a YES in the brackets to vote for it, or place a NO in the brackets to vote against it. If you don't want to vote on the group, place an ABSTAIN in the brackets. If you leave the bracket blank, your vote will be rejected for failure to cast a vote. Don't worry about the spacing of the columns or any quote characters (">") that your reply inserts. Then MAIL the ballot to: Just Replying to this message should work, but check the "To:" line. Quick voting checklist: 1) Fill in the ballot form below. Don't forget to include your Real Name. 2) Delete everything but the ballot in your reply to this CFV. 3) Make sure your reply goes to . ===== BEGINNING OF BALLOT: Delete everything BEFORE this line ================ Please DO NOT alter, modify, or delete any of the information in this ballot. Votes mailed by WWW/HTML/CGI forms are considered anonymous votes (the vote must be mailed directly from the voter to the votetaker). Neither ABSTAIN nor CANCEL messages are counted as votes; they serve only to cancel any previous vote. Abstentions are noted in the final vote list, whereas CANCEL removes your vote from that list entirely (this is the only difference between the two). In cases where voting fraud is determined to have occurred, it is standard operating procedure to delete ALL votes submitted by the violator. There will be a five-day period following the voting period during which the published vote list may be corrected and any irregularities addressed. The requirements for group creation are 100 more YES votes than NO votes, and 2/3 of all counted votes must be YES. When in doubt, ask the votetaker.
