PROPOSAL
  Name: rec.arts.puppetry
  Status: unmoderated
Description: Puppets in any form or venue
  Proponent: Larry Smith
  Mentor: Jim Jewett

RATIONALE
This RFD is prompted by a resurgence of interest in "classical" puppetry,
as shown by the popularity of a number of traveling puppet shows in New
England and elsewhere, and by new "permanent" theater venues, such as
the recent opening of the USA's largest Marionette Opera in New Hampshire,
Puppetry is used in most modern SF productions, either on-screen, with
stop-motion or rod puppets, or off-screen, as with the puppets used to
input motion information into the computer for Jurassic Parks dinosaurs.
This newsgroup would provide a home for all types of discussion related
to puppetry, from high-school productions with marionettes to the Muppets
to the techniques needed to put on recorded shows.

Some of this discussion is on the net already in the form of the group
alt.tv.muppets. While almost anything in alt.tv.muppets would be
appropriate for rec.arts.puppetry, the tighter focus would likely
leave this group unaffected except for people needing the wider
distribution available in a "big 7" newsgroup. Puppet discussions
pop up in the most unlikely places - for example, in a recent thread
on rec.models.rockets where rocketeers reminisced about "The Thunder-
birds" and other old supermarionation shows.

CHARTER
rec.arts.puppetry is a newsgroup dedicated to discussing puppets of every
type and about any application that uses them. Topics can cover any area
in which puppets of any kind are employed. These can include, but are not
limited to: marionettes, hand puppets, rod puppets, combination puppets
(such as muppets), radio-control or automatic puppets such as animitrons,
shadow puppets and others. Discussion of venues using puppets, including
both professional, such as the Muppet Show, Thunderbirds, Fireball XL-5
and other SuperMarionation productions, etc, and amateur are also welcome.
Appropriate topics would include how such shows are produced, puppet man-
ipulation techniques, voices, electronics used in puppetry, and can even
verge onto computer animation where input or output comes from puppets.

PROCEDURE
Please note that this is not a call for votes; it is a request for
comments and suggestions on improving the proposal. Discussion should
take place only in news.groups, after which it may be brought to a vote.

(This is the only difference between the two.)

Anything else may be rejected by the automatic vote counting program. The

Standard Guidelines for voting apply: no more than one vote per person,
no more than one vote per account. If you attempt multiple votes or
other vote fraud, all your votes may be canceled and your name published.

The complete vote list will be posted with the vote result, including
how each person voted. Note that Usenet votes are not done by secret
ballot.

There will then be a five-day period during which the published vote
list may be corrected and any irregularities addressed. The
requirements for group creation are 100 more YES votes than NO votes,
and 2/3 of all counted votes being YES.
