The objectives are: + To offer a public forum to discuss mystery novels and films from a standpoint of the plot development. + To create a meeting place for people with interest in reading of this genre, for opinions and criticism. + To exchange tips on good and bad crime fiction and films, and to discuss new publications on the field. The emphasis is not on the artistic value, but rather on the plot; is it realistic, are the twists and turns surprising, is it suspenseful? + The classical question on how to commit the perfect crime will certainly be an aspect of the discussion. Examples in the relevant literature may be critically examined. + To establish a place on the net were fans of the classical whodunnit can have it out with the disciples of the hardboiled variation. Moderation will probably be unnecessary, since only people with an interest in the subject are expected to take part in the discussion. Unrelated postings and "noise" is likely to be ignored. D*n G*nn*n and S*rd*r Arg*c don't read Agatha Christie Novels, because they don't read. The existing groups rec.arts.books and rec.arts.movies focus on the formal aspects and discuss mysteries mainly from the artistic standpoint. Long discussions on questions of the plots are not of interest there. The name of the newsgroup is rec.arts.mystery. If somebody has a better suggestion, we are open to discussion of this detail. Branching would be possible, but unlikely. This RFD is being posted to the following Newsgroups : news.announce.newgroups news.groups rec.arts.books rec.arts.movies rec.arts.tv alt.fan.holmes Any follow-up to this RFD should be directed to news.groups. Examples in the relevant literature may be critically examined (To give the group a scientific touch). + To establish a place on the net were fans of the classical whodunit can have it out with the disciples of the hardboiled variation or fans of the "police procedural". Moderation will probably be unnecessary, since only people with an interest in the subject are expected to take part in the discuss- ion. Unrelated postings and "noise" are strongly discouraged. Ad-hominem posts and flame wars cannot be excluded with certainty in an unmoderated group, but should not occur frequently in a forum for a rather "like-minded" group of people. Spoilers concerning the plot of mysteries should be made visible in the header of the postings. We don't want to know whodunit before the sleuth tells us or we find out by ourselves. Advertising related to to the subject should also be labeled, unrelated advertising should be sent to /dev/null rather than rec.arts.mystery. The existing groups rec.arts.books and rec.arts.movies cover "mysteries" to some degree, but focus on other aspects. They are also both quite general, and therefore voluminous, so that readers specifically looking to discuss mysteries will encounter difficulties. Rec.arts.mystery intends to close that gap. There exist already two mailing lists (dorothy-l and mystery) with similar intent. People who prefer the net as a forum will find an alternative in rec.arts.mystery. The name of the newsgroup is rec.arts.mystery, which has been chosen on the grounds of a straw poll. Branching in the future may be possible, but is rather unlikely. HOW TO VOTE Send MAIL to: [email protected] Just Replying should work if you are not reading this on a mailing list. Your mail message should contain one of the following statements: I vote YES on rec.arts.mystery I vote NO on rec.arts.mystery You may also ABSTAIN in place of YES/NO - this will not affect the outcome. Anything else may be rejected by the automatic vote counting program. The votetaker will respond to your received ballots with a personal acknowledge- ment by mail - if you do not receive one within several days, try again. It's your responsibility to make sure your vote is registered correctly. One vote counted per person, no more than one per account. Addresses and votes of all voters will be published in the final voting results list.
