Date: 13 Jan 92 16:15:02 GMT Approved: [email protected] Lines: 133 This was initially discussed in October, but because of a mailer problem with the site which was going to collect the votes it was not brought to a vote at that time. Steve Kinzler has requested that we reissue the RFD. Most of this was originally written by Steve, but I have made some modifications. Request for Discussion Reissued 01/11/92 ======= === ========== GROUP: rec.humor.oracle, replacing alt.humor.oracle STATUS: moderated INITIAL MODERATOR: Steve Kinzler ([email protected]) PURPOSE: For postings of the Usenet Oracularities Digest at a maximum frequency of one every two days, periodic information postings, and announcements from the moderator. -------------------------- GROUP: rec.humor.oracle.d STATUS: unmoderated PURPOSE: For discussion of the Usenet Oracle among its participants. --------------------------- What's the Usenet Oracle? Briefly and primarily, it's a means to support a cooperative effort for creative, original humor. Software currently on iuvax.cs.indiana.edu accepts e-mail containing "questions for the all-knowing Oracle". The software sends out these questions to other questioners to be answered, and then forwards the answer to the original questioners, all anonymously. Copies of the resulting questions/answers are forwarded to volunteers for review and selection for publication in the Usenet Oracularities. Readers are invited to rate the published Oracularities, and the results are included in a later issue. The persons who wrote the question and answer are notified by e-mail of the score that their joint efforts produced. Every couple of months, the very best questions/answers are submitted to rec.humor.funny. The Usenet Oracle has been running steadily for over two years. Over 380 issues of the Usenet Oracularities Digest have been sent out. In its earliest months, issues of the digest were published more frequently and contained material of more varying quality. They are now limited to at most one issue every two days and their content is chosen by a diverse group of volunteers. For a more complete explanation of the Usenet Oracle and details about accessing its archives, we refer you to the "Intro to the Usenet Oracle" article posted to alt.humor.oracle and news.answers. This may also be obtained by sending mail to [email protected] with the word "help" in the subject line. Why rec.humor.oracle? The Usenet Oracularities were originally posted to rec.humor. A call by Oracularities readers who weren't interested in the rest of rec.humor and by rec.humor readers who weren't interested in the Oracularities led me to create a separate newsgroup, alt.humor.oracle. alt.humor.oracle has proved itself as a viable newsgroup with 18,000 readers reported in recent statistics (#501, 58% propagation). However, as an alt group, its availability is limited and my mailing list for the Oracularities digests contains hundreds of people who are there because they cannot receive alt.humor.oracle. What happens to rec.humor.oracle if [email protected] goes out of business? Steve doesn't expect this to happen. If for any reason (none of which we can now forsee), they would be no longer able to support the Usenet Oracle at indiana.edu, there would be capable volunteers at other sites to take over. What does the moderator do? The Oracle doesn't take much to keep it running. The software is developed to a point where it pretty much runs itself. For the most part, the moderator needs to keep an eye on it, manage the group of volunteer reviewers, and edit the Oracularities. Why is this being brought up again? Steve Kinzler is going on a six month sabbatical starting in March. He would like to see the Oracle through the creation of rec.humor.oracle, and then turn it over to someone else, at least for the period of time when he will be off the net. (Steve does not expect finding a new moderator to be much of a problem.) Why does rec.humor.oracle need to be moderated and why do we need rec.humor.oracle.d? At present alt.humor.oracle contains both the Oracle Digest and comments and other questions or discussions about the Digest or the Oracle. There are not at present a large number of non-Digest postings, but the volume will likely increase once it moves to the rec hierarchy. Many of the non-Digest posts which appear more correctly should have been sent to the Oracle as a question. Having rec.humor.oracle moderated will simplify this, and those people who would prefer only to read the Oracularities will not have the other traffic to deal with. Replies and followups to rec.humor.oracle could be treated as votes, which is how followups are currently treated in the Oracularity Digest. However, if rec.humor.oracle.d fails discussion would have to take place in rec.humor.d. When will voting begin? Because this was discussed for some time last fall, with some changes made in the original proposal based on discussion at that time, we hope that we can begin the voting in just a few weeks, so that it can be concluded before Steve takes off. Therefore, we feel that voting may begin as early as January 25th. Michael Nolan will serve as vote collector and tabulator, the exact address and voting procedures will be contained in the Call For Votes when it is issued. This will be a two part vote, one for the creation of rec.humor.oracle (moderated) and one for the creation of rec.humor.oracle.d (unmoderated). The usual requirements (2/3 of the votes in favor, and at least 100 more YES votes than NO votes) will apply. --- Michael Nolan, [email protected] Tailored Software Services, Inc. ---------------- VOTING PROCEDURE: IMPORTANT--This is a two part vote, please use the ballot form below to simplify the tabulating procedure. Votes should be sent to [email protected] PLEASE SEND A CC OF YOUR VOTE TO: [email protected], because e-mail delivery to tssi.com was interrupted last Thursday and has not yet been restored. (To make matters worse, most users are not getting bounce messages.) Votes will not be individually acknowledged, but one or more mass acknowledgements will be posted during the voting period. Only ballots received by e-mail during the voting period will be counted. VOTING PERIOD: Now (1/22/92) through 23:59 CST on 2/16/92. TABULATION PROCEDURE: Votes will be tabulated by Michael Nolan ([email protected]). The criteria for approval shall be a 2/3 majority vote in favor with 100 more 'FOR' votes that 'AGAINST' votes. The two proposals will be tabulated separately. (Although if proposal 1 fails, proposal 2 is moot.) SAMPLE BALLOT FORM Edit to eliminate the unwanted words and mail to [email protected] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Proposal 1: I vote for/against the creation of rec.humor.oracle Proposal 2: I vote for/against the creation of rec.humor.oracle.d --------------------------------------------------------------------- Mass acknowledgement of votes received between 9:00 AM CST 1/28/92 and 4 PM CST on 2/5/92. Votes received prior to that were in the first Mass Acknowledgement and are not repeated here. I have NOT cross-checked the two list for duplicates yet.
