Charters: sci.techniques.testing.nondestructive ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ A newsgroup dedicated to the exchange of information and discussion of issues relating to nondestructive testing of materials. Anyone interested will be welcome to participate in discussions about, but not limited to: 1. NDT methods: x-radiography, acoustic emission, penetrant, ultrasonics, magnetic particle, visual, thermography, eddy current, leak testing, neutron radiography. 2. NDT societies: the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) and other NDT societies with reciprocity to ASNT. 3. Employment opportunities within the NDT field. 4. Educational resources. 5. Upcoming NDT Conferences. People who will post will want to know (or know more) about one of the five listed above. Nondestructive testing (NDT) is a multi-disciplined field of science that is concerned with the evaluation, inspection, testing, and characterization of materials and structures through methods that do not significantly alter the material or structure. This group, sci.materials.ndt, will be a place for the exchange of information and the discussion of issues relating to nondestructive testing of materials. No advertisements, except for individual employment, will be acceptable for this group. Not only does NDT draw upon multiple disciplines in science and engineering but with the advent of international standards, such as ISO 9000, NDT practitioners will increasingly need to be in contact with one another regardless of nationality, and Usenet would be an excellent vehicle for this type of communication. sci.techniques.testing.misc ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ A newsgroup dedicated to the exchange of information and discussion of issues relating to general testing techniques. This group is not considered as a catch-all group, but as a starting point for additional groups under this category. Rationale: A newsgroup would greatly facilitate communication of throughout the world who are concerned with the advancement of NDT. A mailing list might not be known to many of the people who would otherwise want to participate. Distribution of RFD: The complete official messages - RFD, CFV and vote results will be posted to these required or affected newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups, news.groups and to interested newsgroups and mailing lists: sci.materials.ceramics, sci.materials, sci.engr.metallurgy, sci.engr.civil, sci.engr.mech, sci.engr, sci.engr.manufacturing, bit.listserv.quality, sci.polymers and to the mailing lists: list name list address QUALITY [email protected] UAQFP [email protected] ISO9000 [email protected] CIMTLK-L [email protected] ASTMSRCH [email protected] SAMPE-L [email protected] MATERIALS-L [email protected] Supporters of this Proposal This proposal is being supported by the following people. We encourage you to participate in the discussions in news.groups. If you need to contact either of us personally, we are: Proponent: [email protected] Dr. Martin P. Jones Mentor: [email protected] John Pimentel Procedure: Interested parties are encouraged to comment on this proposal in news.groups. Please post your comments *only* in news.groups. After 21 days, if there appears to be a strong consensus in favor of this proposal as it is written here, a CFV will be posted, which will initiate the voting process; otherwise, discussion will continue until a more refined proposal can be prepared. Again, please do *not* vote now. The voting process has not begun, and your votes will be DISCARDED if you attempt to do so. For more information on the newsgroup creation process, see the documents entitled "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and "Usenet Newsgroup Creation Companion" by David Lawrence <[email protected]>, posted regularly to news.groups, news.announce.newusers, and news.answers, and available for ftp at rtfm.mit.edu in /pub/usenet/news.groups. HOW TO VOTE Erase everything above the top "-=-=-=-" line and erase everything below the bottom "-=-=-=-" line. Do not erase anything between these lines and do not change the group name. Basically, remove everything except the ballot - we have to save them all on disk. Give your name on the line that asks for it. Place a YES or NO in the brackets next to the group name to vote for or against it. Don't worry about spacing of the columns or any quote characters (">") that your reply inserts. Anything else may be rejected by the automatic vote counting program. The votetaker will respond to your received ballots with a personal acknowledge- ment by mail - if you do not receive one within several days, try again. It's your responsibility to make sure your vote is registered correctly. If you later change your mind you may vote again; only your last valid vote will count. Standard Guidelines for voting apply: no more than one vote per person, no more than one vote per account. If you attempt multiple votes or other vote fraud, all your votes may be canceled and your name published. The complete vote list will be posted with the vote result, including how each person voted. Note that Usenet votes are not done by secret ballot. There will then be a five-day period during which the published vote list may be corrected and any irregularities addressed.
