This announcement is cross-posted to the newsgroup comp.graphics.visualization where HDF questions occasionally appear. PURPOSE: The purpose of the newsgroup "sci.data.hdf" would be for discussing information related to the use of the Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). Topics of discussion could include problems encountered using HDF, questions about where to get HDF, discussions of specific uses for HDF, etc. It is anticipated that readers of the group would be scientists (and software developers) who use the HDF data format. RATIONALE: HDF is a public domain software system that defines a standard file format, the Hierarchical Data Format, designed specifically for scientific applications. Developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), HDF enjoys wide acceptance in the scientific community, having been adopted as a standard by scientists and scientific organizations ranging over such diverse fields as astronomy, physics, chemistry, medical research, health care, space science, atmospheric sciences, earth sciences and environmental science. HDF spans the range of computing platforms from high performance computing environments to personal computers." It is hoped that the creation of the group, "sci.data.hdf" will encourage and facilitate a greater amount of collaboration and sharing of information and experience between individuals and groups. NEWSGROUP CREATION: The discussion period will be from February 28, 1993 to March 30, 1993. Please post all discussions to "news.groups" From [email protected] Thu Apr 22 11:41:00 1993 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: [email protected] (Briand T.
