This newsgroup would be used by the Earth Observing System Distributed Information System (EOSDIS) community for the collaborating of EOS related information. It would include postings of "The Processor" and the "The Earth Observer" newsletters which are periodicals containing timely EOS news events and information on up-coming meetings. The newsgroup would also contain information regarding new data sets, and other important EOS related material. There are currently hundreds of scientists around the world involved with the EOSDIS and this would be a great forum for their collaborating of ideas. Although the EOSDIS Project covers a broad spectrum of the NASA community, covering many scientific disciplines, we plan to begin with a single newsgroup (SCI.EOS). Depending on the usage of SCI.EOS, sub-newsgroups may be created. As proposed by the EOS Project, this newsgroup (SCI.EOS) would be moderated by an EOS Project Office representative. EOS will be using public networks to increase accessibility of data by scientists. To support the wide community of potential researchers accessing EOS-obtained data, the Internet will be relied upon to be the main conduit of networked communications nationaly and world-wide. Sci.geo.eos is intended to be used by all interested parties concerned with NASA's Earth Observation System (EOS). The EOS project is an immensely complex and far reaching endeavor, and this newsgroup will be used for the exchange of ideas and information regarding the function and operation of EOS. Sci.geo.eos is intended to be a top level umbrella with the potential for many sub-groups pertaining to more specific topics such as the EOS Distributed Information System (EOSDIS), specific instruments and missions, etc. This forum will provide a repository for information impacting EOS system users, administrators, and managers. This newsgroup is intended to provide a mechanism for current Usenet users to acquire EOS project specific information. DISCUSSION - Discussion of this proposal will take place on news.groups starting at the time of this posting and lasting 30 days. VOTE - A Call for Votes will be conducted by a neutral third party CROSSPOSTING - The RFD is crossposted in the following groups: news.announce.newgroups news.groups sci.geo.geology Rationale - The rationale was discussed in the charter section. Currently there is no means for EOS users with Usenet feeds to access EOS project related information. This group will provide that means. This is one step in integrating network developments in the effort to reach the widest community possible. EOS will also be tied into the World Wide Web, Gopher and provide anonymous FTP service. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- EOS V0 Network Support Office e-mail: [email protected] Goddard Space Flight Center voice: (301) 286-1074 Greenbelt Md. 20771 From [email protected] Thu Feb 24 17:56:41 1994 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: [email protected] (L.
