                     REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
     unmoderated group sci.engr.chem.misc (renames sci.engr.chem)
              unmoderated group sci.engr.chem.separation

Newsgroup lines:
sci.engr.chem.misc	General topics related to chemical engineering.
sci.engr.chem.separation	Separations in the chemical process.

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the reorganisation of
the Usenet Newsgroup sci.engr.chem. This is not a Call For Votes (CFV);
you cannot vote at this time. Procedural details are below.

RATIONALE: sci.engr.chem.misc

Chemical engineering is devided to some 20 unit operations such as
evaporation, distillation, extraction, adsorption, mixing, drying and
separation. Presently the group sci.engr.chem has no further
hierarchies and all articles, queries and replies on such a vast range
of subjects are posted to this overburdened group. The creation of new
subgroups will enable to logically develop hierarchies within
sci.engr.chem.* for a more clear distinction of the various unit
operations e.g. sci.engr.chem.separation or sci.engr.chem.extraction.

RATIONALE: sci.engr.chem.separation

Separation is a major unit operation that exists in almost every
flowscheme related to the chemical process industries, pharmaceutics,
ore beneficiation or water and waste treatment. The present techniques
are very diverse and new developments are expanding rapidly so this
newsgroups is proposed to provide an unmoderated forum for discussions
by plant and design engineers, research personnel and students on all
process and mechanical aspects concerning solid-liquid separation.

CHARTER: sci.engr.chem.misc

Discussions on general topics related to chemical engineering.

CHARTER: sci.engr.chem.separation

The following topics are proposed for unmoderated discussions:

Separation Methods:
* Filtration by vacuum and pressure filters.
* Centrifugation by filtering and sedimenting centrifuges.
* Sedimentation by conventional, storage and hi-rate thickeners.
* Clarification by clarifiers, solids contact and sludge blanket.
* Coagulation and flocculation by bridging polymers.
* Moisture reduction by wetting agents.
* Polishing by precoat filters, pressure and deep-bed filters.
* Dissolved air flotation by DAF flotators.

Process and Mechanical:
* Layout design.
* Mechanical and maintenance considerations.

Research and Piloting:
* Particle analysis and the influence on performance.
* Defining "Relative Filtration Index" during research on reaction.
* Establishing diminishing returns on wash efficiencies and drying.
* Selection of filter media.
* Evaluating long-term effects on separation rates.

This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase
of the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroup
should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue for
a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this
proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups), after which a Call For
Votes (CFV) may be posted by a neutral vote taker if the discussion
warrants it. Please do not attempt to vote until this happens.

All discussions of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.

This RFD attempts to comply fully with the Usenet newsgroup creation
guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and "How
to Format and Submit a New Group Proposal". Please refer to these
documents (available in news.announce.newgroups) if you have any
questions about the process.

This RFD has been posted to the following newsgroups:
